I don't own a Wii or follow the scene. I am looking for some recommendations for my 8yr old nephew. He is extremely smart to the point that he could read music and play the piano by age 5. He was reading books by age 3, and at age 5 he was reading on a 2nd grade level. So things that are educational or challenging are not out of the question. His parents keep him away from violence and things which are not age appropriate.

Here is a list of what he currently owns:
Boom Blox
Chuck E Cheese's Party Games
Lego Star Wars The Complete Saga
Mario Kart
Mario Sports Mix
Star Wars The Clone Wars - Republic Heroes
Super Mario Bros.
Toy Story Mania
Wii Play
Wii Sports
Wii Sports Resort

He really loves Mario Kart and Super Mario. He enjoys old school games (thanks to me), I started him playing Sonic, Castlevania, SMB1 & 2, and other stuff at age 3.

He does not have access to the Internet so Wii-ware is out of the questions.

I'm on a short time table, heading out this afternoon to start looking for a b-day gift for him. I appreciate all responses.

Man, Kirby's Epic Yarn would be at the top of my list for someone that age. It's an excellent game with a level of challenge well suited for a younger gamer.

I would definately recommend Kirby's Epic Yarn as well, my 9 year old nephew loves it. I would also suggest Donkey Kong Country Returns, as he really enjoys that as well..

The new Boom Blox is good, worthy sequel to the first (both of them kick a lot of ass, they're so much fun).

Toy Story 3 was supposed to be pretty good.

Super Mario All-Stars is good if he likes the original SMB games.

Super Mario Galaxy or Sonic Colors for some platforming action.

MadWorld is a favorite with kids

Well I feel stupid. That should have been the first game I thought of.

Also Wii Party. I don't like it, be he'll probably find it fun if he likes Wii Play.

i've been considering GC stuff as well but I would need to grab him a wireless controller, memorycard, and a game or two. i'm heading to the used shop soon so i'll see what they have in stock.

i'll check youtube for a vid of that kirby game now.

Would shovelware be acceptable or is he a gamer?

Also, as for retro games, would Chrono Trigger be too violent?

he is a gamer, but he has a short attention span. i don't think he is ready for an RPG. shovelware is fine, especially if its fun and cheap. that way i could get him 2+ things for his bday.

Kirby, yes.

I tested Ice age 3 and enjoyed it the few stages I played, it's action + item collection in 3D world. if he likes this kind of movies, maybe he will like the game.

If he likes, you can try point and click games (like Secret Files: Tunguska).
not sure if it's his age, but you could let him try some other game of the same genre first, like monkey island games on Scummvm

I always want to let new kids learn how we discovered video games and makes them go through the games I liked when I wad a kid. I'm sure you too.

Edit :
A boy and his blob should be great too, puzzle-action-plateformer and has beautiful graphics

I found de Blob quite amusing. The second part is better according to some, though it's rated E10+, while part 1 is just E. Haven't actually tried part 2 myself.

Kirby's Epic Yarn would probably be the best choice (Well, for me anyways)

Deblob is also a fun kiddy game.

This is New super mario brothers wii, I presume? If not, I suggest it. If so...+1 Kirby (it has great co-op multiplayer).

As far as I can think of, A boy and his blob is probably the best runner-up (not to be confused with 'de blob'...though that isn't a bad game either).
