The reason every other version of Windows is either awesome or sucks is that there are two development teams. When one version launches the other one is half done.

Windows 9X, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8.... starting to see a pattern?

Stick with 7 until what ever replaces 8 comes out, thats a tip from the pro's! lol I kid I kid. 8 looks like it will be nice if you have a new machine with a touch screen monitor. (on a personal note I can't stand dust and fingerprints on my screen so I will resist touch screen tech on my PC as long as possible.)

I would say a little more than that even, Windows 7 the disks are all the same, what determines what is installed is the key used. (well for most versions anyway.) MS has that whole "anytime upgrade" thing you can buy a new key and put your disk back in and go from home to pro or ultimate in no time.

The only real difference seems to be boot time, and I sure doubt 35 seconds is the Win7 boot time unless it's worse than Vista, because my computer right now doesn't take 35 seconds to load up. (and runs Vista...).
Now i'm not sayin' it isn't better.
I'm just saying it's an expansion pack.

Kinda like the N64 RAM upgrade thing. You're still playin' an N64.
It's just a slightly better N64 now.

I have a laptop that barely runs Vista. I'm not just talking about boot time. It's slow and laggy with it's 1.6 GHz processor and 1GB of RAM. Windows 8 runs like a dream on it, though. The boot time is remarkably quick and I experience almost no lag.

It's not just the boot time. The new rendering engine makes everything feel a lot smoother. And the OS is a lot less resource-hungry.
(But if the EFI install would work on my PC, I'd be getting literally 4 second boot times. Oh well, 11 seconds is fast enough I guess).

That video is in jest, I presume. But I wonder if we'll ever see "DS" style laptops, with the bottom screen a touch-screen that is generally an on-screen keyboard, but can also be switched to mirror the main UI for touch navigation...

I'm actually thinking of downgrading my server laptop to windows 2000.
Iirc the laptop supports Win 2000 factory defaulted.

It's such a shame that it's severely outdated.cause I'd love to keep using it.

XP Loses support in 2014 (As in saying its losing support as a downside? Maybe at the Windows 9 launch complain) , and on a Single Core system is still the best OS to date. Personal preference is Windows 7, but honestly post SP 2, Vista is barely different. Have only played with Windows 8 briefly... Seems fine. /shrug.

Hm, this all Awesome Feedback thanks guys, yeah Metro UI is a hit and miss with users I for one love it...but I can't help feel like 8's missing something? honestly, after doing some thinking it was the start menu. sure I like the idea of all my short cuts/apps in one spot and not having to install third party programs like rocket dock to keep my desktop clean and neat. With the press of my Windows button and bam I'm on a page with all my apps and shortcuts. but because I miss my start menu I may switch back to 7 not sure yet there are so many things about 8 that over shine 7 and so many things in 7 that hold their own against 8.

When Vista was released I was pretty happy about the new UI the polished look but when I heard about all the problems ppl had and that Windows 7 was on the way I could only assume they released Vista as a means to shut us up until 7 was out (that was my thinking at the time ) I know they fixed allot with Vista and have considered a few times to go back to it but meh.

So far it would seem allot of ppl prefer 7 over 8 at the moment and as mentioned before XP is and in my opinion gone the way of the dinosaurs, may it rest in peace

um, sure you stick with that idea lol really did you even see the video? personally it looks pretty stupid, but I'm not gonna jump to conclusions until I've tried if I ever try it!

+1 to the XP still technically being supported. I certainly have not felt the need to upgrade any clients yet and the only thing that might see me do it in the near future is seeing how windows 8 turns out and the subsequent unavailability of big boy versions of 7.

As for best out of the box (or a very basic nlite) for me it is a toss up between XP and 7 but frankly given the run of options (or I guess a technet/MSDN subscription) I would probably opt to use a server version cut right back- back when Vista took ages to beat into shape (something I have little patience for as time goes on) and I decided I wanted to laugh at directX 10 I ended up with the server version which was awesome. Better yet server versions have some really nice options without having to use a kludge like xpunlimited.

I probably should be quiet until I play with windows 8 though- I have not even fired it through a VM yet let alone proper hardware.

All that said firefox runs on everything that really matters and most things have a web option, if I can help it exchange is a thing of the past for most people (not to mention MS is looking to migrate a lot of it online) and back when open office was a real thing it had replaced MS office* for me save for some legacy stuff which is also not so much of a problem. To this end I sense my time with windows is rapidly coming to an end and if I bothered to make some effort then quite a few clients can probably be weaned off it as well as many are now quite used to various linuxes and BSD flavours thanks to "online banking/security/travelling laptop". The only thing I think I would really miss is Skype but it is rapidly moving down in my opinion and skype tablet will probably sit next to something and be able to do things on the rare occasion where the VM fails.

*I probably should note I shudder if I have to use MS office or libre office for a proper document/database/something to publish and have done for some time.

Depends on your machine a lot, if you're a gamer then yes, win7x64 is the best choice & to play older games/software you can use vmware or xpmode. both can run software windows outside the vm, like if you where running software normally.
