So I do a bit of downloading through torrents and whatnot. And I've always used Kaspersky Internet Security 2011. Of course it was a torrented version and I would always have to download new keys when Kaspersky blocked them.

Anyways, it turns out Kaspersky is getting better and faster at blocking keys. And I'm getting tired of finding new torrents with new keys to install.

So whats a good anti-virus? And please note, I will not use Avast, or AVG (because those are terrible).

AVComparatives does a rundown of virus scanning apps to test for detection rates:

My personal opinion is this:
I use Avira. It's got an annoying nag screen, but that can be disabled relatively easy.
Avast is decent, but the UI is heavy and bloated.
Microsoft Security Essentials is nice, but failed to pick up a known-infected file.
AVG is HORRENDOUS. I had MAJOR conflicts with applications and poor detection.
NOD32 was.... complicated. I didn't use it very long.

Microsoft Security Essentials does a decent job of real-time watch, but since it doesn't catch everything, combo it up with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and run scans every week.

nod32 or Sunbelt Vipre Antivirus Premium

kaspersky takes forever to boot, imho

Not for me, I always have it running, mainly because I never shut my computer off. It worked just fine. I'd keep it, I just hated having to constantly download new keys.

AVG Internet security + MalwareBytes + Microsoft Security Essentials = Win

And for those with questions, AVG and MSE works good together without fighting each other.

EDIT: and for AVG if you find the right key you have license to 2018

AVG is completely shit.

Replace AVG there with Avira and you have a pretty good free antivirus.

So should I download a free version of Avira, or should I just torrent the premium?

And for those of you asking, I download a lot of torrents, browse some sites, the occasional pr0n, but nothing too fishy or go to any sites that I don't know.

Most people have had a bad experience. Also, not that you're expected to have read it, but the EULA of AVG is pretty damn nasty.

MSE + CommonSense? 1999 = win

Note: CommonSense? 2011 is also available, but is basically the exact same thing. It really hasn't changed through the years...

Common Sense isn't going to help you when MSE fails to detect something.

QUOTE(Rogue_Syst3m @ Apr 10 2011, 10:49 PM) ive heard stories about things getting past avg, so its a good idea to have 2 anti's
Don't. Most of the stuff that "gets past" an anti-virus is not viruses, so it's good to keep an anti-malware like malwarebytes as well, but not two antiviruses.

You know, we have an infection sticky, and it has such useful sections as "future prevention", and an FAQ...

@The Real Jdbye, I thought about that and I have blank DVD's and Blurays but honestly after like 90 songs I just listen to it a couple of hundred times toss it out and burn something else or have like 2-3 CD's. Florida here the heat in the car tends to ruin the CD's after like a few months even commercial pressed ones don't last too long.
