I am running a Warrior, Red, White, Black mage thingie, works alright I must say but I'm thinking of making my white mage red, or perhaps make him another class altogether.

I have a Knight / Ranger / White mage / Black mage atm
But at the first job change I had a:
Red mage / Warrior / White mage / Black mage

I tried changing the knight to a dragoon and the ranger to the dark knight, but I didn't like them. The ranger deals crazy damage later on, it's def worth the arrows and later on you get infinite 'ammo' with a particular ranger weapon

I've got a Warrior, Monk, White Mage, Black Mage.

My Black Mage is dealing crazy damage with a bow -- more than both my warrior and monk.

Anybody else experienced that?

I noticed that at first but he seems to have gone downhill at the moment using iron arrows.

I've started off with a Warrior, White Mage, Thief and Black Mage but got sick of the White Mage pretty sharpish and swapped for a Warrior whilst changing my other Warrior to a Red Mage.

Warrior, Red Mage, Monk, and Thief.
So far, these last two classes suck and fail.

For me the last two classes are the thing that holds my team together (nowadays they both have 14 odd hits @ 700 odd damage on a regular basis and can take a punch too), head on down to the trashed village at the bottom of the map and head to the top house, in the fireplace/hidden room there is a pot with a nice claw in it.
The thief opens locks (set the order to have the thief first) and go to the castle with the locked doors, in the locked doors there are some nice weapons and supplies, there were some knives in various dungeons that work well. I got the jobs from the fire crystal but it is hard to want to change from a great character to a new one even if my black mage can not use the latest bows.

oh and: Was I the only one slightly disappointed with the surface world, compared to other FF titles this was a poor show for the "altered/second world" section

I was having difficulty until I discovered how MP works. I changed my guys into:

Warrior, White Mage, Black Mage, Red Mage

So far it's working great

Same with me, but I'm not sure it's the best idea now.

I can't beat that stupid evil dwarf a second time, he just does too much damage

By the way, white mages can indeed use aero, or if you equip them with a staff (or two), go to your items screen in battle, scroll all the way to the top and press up once more and it'll let you use the spells from your staffs, and it doesn't even waste MP

Thank YOU! *hugs and kisses*

I'm currently rolling with a Knight, Scholar, White Mage and Black Mage. I'm dropping the scholar as soon as I'm outta this damp tree.

rambozotheclown, how do you go about saving anyway?

Save on the main map screen, don't use quick save as it vanishes after you load from it, so you're screwed unless you then quicksave again.

I started with Monk, Warrior, Black Mage and White Mage. Now I'm swapping them around a little, although I keep my Monk as he is (he's level 71 now). My Warrior was upgraded to a Knight, but is now a level 8 Dragoon - purely as I think his jump ability will help me in the shite boss fight I've got. My Black Mage has been upgraded to a Dark Knight. My White Mage was changed to a ranger, then Evoker, but I switched back to Ranger as I can't find any damn summon magic. And Phoenix Down's are in short supply in this game too!

It's an alright game, this. The tedium of all those fights in order to level has been offset somewhat by the hand-held system, which means I can level up while watching a movie, and paying minimal attention to the DS.

The changing as more jobs open up seems a bit crap, as it takes so long to get up the early job classes and get to the meaty bonuses. I guess some of them must be worth it and start off better?

Time to have another crack at that utter bastard in the Sardonia castle...

I have a problem: I just fled from the dragon's nest, and now I am stuck between mountains and the sea. Uptil this point, everyone was 'freelancer'. I changed it a bit around (two fighters, two white mages), and 'learned' the mini-spell for all of them, but 'mini' is set to zero, and I can't shrink anyone... I have been 'practising' to get the white mages and the warriors to decent job levels again, but I still can't use mini... Why is that? Am I stuck in an impossible situation?

You need to rest at an inn or find one of those fountains to restore your MP (you need MP to use magic), and then when you actually shrink the party, use the option at the bottom "All party members" to only use one charge of your level 2 MP.

EDIT: And this is my 200th post. Pretty funny that'd be an off-topic one.
