Hacking What exactly does an original game disc have compared to a backup?

Newer Wiis cannot run backups without a mod chip, so what exactly is different about an original and a backup? Can't we make a backup that 'copies' the original perfectly?

No Wii can read burned discs without a modchip. New Wiis need to have their drives replaced and a modchip to be able to read burned discs.

Original discs usually have distinctive features to them that cannot be reproduced with a regular DVD burner. I don't know what feature is on Wii discs but PS1 discs for example had some kind of "wobble" that would make the laser move in a specific way and the console would track those movements of the laser. If those movements were according to that distinctive wobble, the console would decide that the disc is legitimate and continue reading the disc. That's why disc swapping was a thing back then, as you could just swap an original disc for a burnt one after the console was done reading the wobble.

An "empty" DVD-R isn't, it has data that allows recorders to know that a recordable disc is in fact inserted, how big is it, who made it, what's the maximum recommended speed... and consoles, generally speaking, typically use the same area (obviously by absolute coincidence) for purposes such as region lock and antipiracy

This is indirectly related to the fact that D3v2, D4, and WiiU (and Playstation 2) drives verify discs in hardware, so you can't just write a homebrew that tries to read them as generic data DVDs!

On PS1 copy protection the algorithm linked me up the following the other day and it serves as a nice overview

"No Wii can read burned discs without a modchip."
I thought there was a hidden mode/drive function that a hacked device firmware could be persuaded to use. I would call that reading without a modchip, not without a mod but without a modchip as it would have been understood going into the Wii generation.

Back on topic then as others have said burnable discs are not all under your control -- the same people that make the content also either are, or are very friendly with*, the people that make the DVD burners. Go figure then why the DVD burner standards include a section that normal pressed media (DVD presses being restricted and expensive either way) can do what it likes to but DVD burners can not touch.

*Panasonic don't make game consoles these days and I don't think they have ever done media as a big thing for them, they do however make some of the very expensive studio cameras that sony et al use to make their films/TV shows ( https://business.panasonic.co.uk/professional-camera/broadcast-and-proav/studio-camera-system ). Not to mention they also make the players and the screens that display it. Sony turns around and says "your security sucks, we are not letting you in the club that plays our stuff" and... yeah.

Original disc to DVD backup: doesn't need a modchip. That's about it.
Original disc to USB backup: If you want to play mods like CTGP-R or Project M, they don't support USB backups.
