Oh is it possible to get faster transfer speeds on a SD than a flashcart?

I do not think in this case it really matters -- games are designed and built to run from the internal SD card and from what we have seen the code difference between cart games and downloadable games are minimal. Back on the DS they might have required faster (the main example would probably be Castlevania portrait of ruin and seemed more to be latency, though that first Tony Hawk game would probably be worth looking at) and back on the GBA they definitely did.

Even in presence of CFW, I still like the option of flash cartridges. The third party device allows for an additional slot for storage. For devices that lack internal storage (NDS/DSLite), it's obligatory. While you could do without for the 3DS given the internal SD, you can cut costs of SD storage by buying two smaller capacity cards rather than one large capacity at a potentially better price.

Furthermore, you increase the overall ceiling FOR capacity. if 128 GB is truly the limit, a flash cart and internal storage in this limit can be up to as high as 256GB

And to respect to flash carts vs CFW. Both use bypasses and manipulation, but it seems nicer to be able to use psuedo hardware to get something done rather than use software to emulate pseudo hardware to get something done. Less roundabout.

CFW. If the 'physical media receiver' of your device fails, at least you can still game on with CFW.

Forgot about this. Though truth be told, I've never had a Nintendo device have it's optical/cartridge reader ever die out on me. Though my Sony PSP had a pretty awful UMD drive. The drive itself is physically gone yet the CFW has given it a second life.

I seem to remember someone testing the 3DS cartridges vs SDHC cards. If I remember correctly, the difference between higher end SD cards and 3DS cartridges were negligible. At that point, I think the bottleneck was the 3DS hardware itself for reading the cards and carts.

The early Wiis had a lot of problems with their optical drives and I've seen my fair share of DS Phats coming in with broken joint and other various problems. Other than that, though, Nintendo has a long legacy of superb build quality.

Whatever gets the job done. CFW gets points for being free, flashcarts get points for (usually) not risking bricking your system if it goes wrong (someone can commence bitching about gateway here, I'm sure)

I thought it was DS lites that had the hinge issues. My 10 year old original DS has perfect hinges, anyway.

Depends on options. CFW, if done right is infinitely better. It unlocked your system. So, you can do region free on retail carts without spending money for it. Plus they get updates almost regularly.. As do flashcards. It depends on the developer. Dark Alex was the best PSP dev.

I've seen some DS Lites come in, which they were all for hinges (or the ribbons in the hinges), but I've seen a lot more Phats come in and not just for hinges, hence the various issues.

Haha my PSP is still running on whatever CFW my Pandora battery gave me. I don't even know if people still use those things. I like the CFW on my PSP but having experienced the service of CycloDS on my old DS I really do like flashcarts.

I still use the pandora battery
So reliable (unless u a 3000/4000)

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.
