hm... looks like no more satisfying findings...
I tried to find out how it could be possible to send
the "SET FEATURE" (EFh) with SubCommand "Disable APM" (85h) command
directly to the attached USB-HDD. Yes, these are IDE/ATA specifications
(I have the PDF somewhere here...) and therefore usable for this kind of HDDs only.
But somehow it should work, because HDDScan for example is able
to send this to the USB-HDD.
Looking thru usbstorage.c, it looks like they didn't have
commands to send 'raw' commands; just INIT/GET_CAPACITY/READ & WRITE SECTORS.
It's more than enough for sending/getting data, but not enough for ATA
specified commands. PLEASE tell somebody I'm wrong...!?
So still no luck with disabling APM thru Wii.
So back to permanently disable APM. No Windows-Tool able to do this
(permanently) for the B8B.
Maybe under DOS?
There are some kind of tools to get an USB-HDD usable under DOS. Nice feature, btw.
It is working via ASPI-Driver. I thought it is maybe possible this way. One try was with
MHDD (via DOS Boot). It was indeed detecting the USB-HDD, but because of ASPI it was handled as
SCSI drive (with limited functions) where APM functions are (inside MHDD) not available...grr...
btw: tools I'm talking about are available here:
http://hddguru.com/
I didn't try all of them yet; have also other things to do (work, for example) and sometimes
you need some time and quiet to use that stuff correctly...
So what's left?
For now, hoping that the next cIOS will have the 'I-read-randomly-some-data-from-
the-HDD-to-prevent-Sleep'-function in and that it will not interrupt usual HDD 'traffic'.
This could maybe a (only) reason to update, because I'm still fine with Rev9 and have less
trouble than others with Rev10...
Some more interesting ideas?
And now for something completely different...
