Yea I am one of those guys who needs advice. I am finally upgrading from an R4 and I can't decide what to get. I am deciding on the Supercard and the CycloDS, I am kind of leaning towards the CycloDS, but it keeps pushing me back to the Supercard because of its price. I want to know if the price for the CycloDS is worth it. What are some features of the CycloDS? I heard of this new in game text reader, I am not too sure what that is.

The only feature that Cyclo has and Supercard doesn't is Wii connectivity.

The only feature that Supercard has and Cyclo doesn't is in-game cheat menu.

Ive just upgraded from an R4, and like you couldnt decide between the SCDS1 and the Cyclo.

Went for the cyclo in the end, for two main reasons. Firstly, having watched a few videos on youtube the cyclo menu is much, MUCH quicker than the scds1 (which is slower than your current R4). Secondly I have an ez flash 3-in-1, and the auto management feature really appealed to me.

I upgraded from my R4 a couple of days ago which I did mostly through a lack of choice since my R4 was beginning to crash frequently and corrupt my save games. As a replacement I bought myself a Cyclo purely because I liked what was on offer for features and ease of use.

Now, I have no experience at all with the Supercard other than their old GBA carts which I was pleased with and have little doubt in my mind that their DS solutions make for very worthy replacements for the R4. I confess that I don't know very much about the DS solutions though so I don't know how easy the transition from an R4 would be. I assume it will be pretty straight forward.

I would definitely recommend the Cyclo for sure as an R4 replacement purely because making the transition was so simple. Plus, I was actually in awe by the pure difference the Cyclo made. Highly recommended.

As for the in-game text reader, basically it's just designed to allow you to read a txt file while you play a game. I suppose the prime reason would be using a page from Gamefaqs.com to read up on help while playing. It's a pretty minor feature but quite nice nevertheless. I haven't actually tried it myself yet. I have read it's a little sluggish atm too but it's only available in the Beta firmware for now so they will probably try and optinimize that as they go along.

I'm pretty sure the R4 is incapable of the majority of the things that the CycloDS can do. The R4 would probably need it's chip upgraded first which would require a new unit anyway. The hardware is just too old and out-dated. I wouldn't hold my breath for either of those features, let alone most of the other ones the Cyclo has.

These are now moot points. The SCDS1 has alternative loaders available (such as YSMENU) which are faster, AND have 3-in-1 support.

Petitioning for something that is: a) Never going to happen, likely due to hardware constraints and lack of support from the R4 team (b) Is already of dubious legality (i.e. the whole context of a flashcard).

Good Luck.

Thanks guys, the people here are helpful as always. My decision is to buy a CycloDS judging from what you guys said even though it's a bit expensive. I will just sell my R4 to someone who doesn't know the actual price (or no experience with flash cards at all). I hope it is worth it!

Oh and BTW I did recently get My Pokemon Ranch and realized my R4 can't connect to it, so there is another reason why i am getting it.

EDIT: Can someone answer another quick question? If I was to get a MircoSDHC is there anything specific that I should be looking for?

The only advice I can personally give on the Micro SDHC front is that it will probably be more helpful to have a read up on the Team Cyclops forum to see what cards users recommend. As far as I'm aware, the Sandisk cards are apparently very good from what I have read so far, but again, I'm not particularly knowledgable on that subject. I hope my vague assistance helps you nevertheless.

Well one good thing about the Cyclo is that it's not dependant on fast SD(HC) cards, like the Supercard. Every Class 4 SDHC card should suffice.

Yea, go with the Cyclo.

I have a SCDS1 myself, but I was disappointed with their latest updates.

Still an excellent card, but the team is not fixing the GUI issues, the barely usable cheat menu, ugly green text, SAV formats, etc.

The main reason I picked it was for the RTS, which is excellent, SDHC, and the Multi-save. At least it can do these three perfectly...

Well, it seems it is worth the price. I guess it's not too bad since I will be getting a whole bunch of games that would cost me way more if I actually bought it.

The RTS seems like a nice feature and the many others it has.

I have a Cyclo and I would recommend it to others.

I don't know much about other flashcarts, but here are some features on the Cyclo:

Turn on/off all cheats in-game.
Save state in-game. (Only 1 save, but multiple saves will probably be added some time in the future.)
In-game text reader. (In the newest beta.)
Soft-reset from all games and homebrew.
Adjust lcd-light in-game.

Gimmicks you'll never need:
Random skin selection on boot

The only bug I've found is that Cyclo (FFTA2) -> FFTA1 (original cart) connectivity doesn't work.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?

  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
