What a coincidence, I just wrote something about this:
http://viidev.blogspot.com/2008/05/secure-...intendo-ds.html

It doesn't make the DS use WPA, but it shows how you can create two networks, one you use with your computers (WPA), and one with your DS (WEP). This way nobody can access your data using the WEP hole.

Only if you have a compatible router though.

does anyone know were I can find custom firmware for a netgear wgr614 v6 router

You won't have any luck finding one for the v6.

Here is a list of routers you should be able to run openWRT or dd-wrt on:
http://wiki.openwrt.org/Hardware

You can also goto www.dd-wrt.com to check if your hardware is compatible (which yours is not)
is there any other custom firmware I can use

As said, not on that particular router. It just doesn't have the hardware to support a custom firmware.

just buy a USB wifi adapter or a NINTENDO wifi adapter to your pc then connect your DS to that

you could also maby connect a WIFI ACCESS POINT to your current router connect it via Ethernet cable and set the encryption on that access point to WEP encryption and connect your DS to that

you can if you use a proper WIFI ADAPTER and not the NINTENDO USB adapter a normal USB wifi you can also set up as an ACCESS POINT

you can however make the NINTENDO adapter into a SOFT APP wifi adapter and you CAN use homebrew and voice chat with it
