Transfer emuNAND to another SD card. Working on New3DS!

EDIT: The emuNAND Tool has been updated and now works again!

Since right now the emuNAND Tool doesn't work, I've come up with a workaround:

Programs you will need:
Both these programs are free.

PLEASE NOTE: Doing the following method will make a 1:1 copy of the source SD card and put it on the target SD card. It will transfer everything, not just emuNAND.

How to:
  1. Plug the source SD card into your PC, this is the card that you want to transfer emuNAND from.
  2. Run USB Image Tool
  3. Click on the SD card and then "Backup"
  4. Remove the source SD Card and replace it with the target SD Card.
  5. Click on the new SD card, locate the backup image and then "Restore"
  6. Run EaseUS Partition Master and click on "EaseUS Partition Master Free"
  7. Right click on the SD card's partition with data on it, it should be in between two Unallocated partitions and choose "Resize/Move Partition"
  8. Click on the MIDDLE PARTITION, the one that has the data on it and expand it TO THE RIGHT (VERY IMPORTANT)
  9. Click OK
  10. Click Apply on the top left, then OK
  11. Done!
Important Information:
Currently with Gateway 3.1.0 there's a (visual?)bug with higher capacity microSD cards. When running emuNAND it doesn't show the "GW3D" in settings, before the version number telling you if you're in emuNAND or not, because of this its very risky to update emuNAND.
With my guide you can use a 4gb microSD card (where the visual bug doesn't happen) to format emuNAND, update to the latest firmware and transfer it onto a higher capacity microSD card.

Don't panic! - When the transfer is complete and you run the updated emuNAND on your new 3ds it still wont show the "GW3D" prefix before the version number. It'll just say 9.5.0-22E or something along those lines.

Any questions, feel free to ask :)

can anyone confirm if this is possible.

i have 2 32gb sd cards, 1 is used in my n3dsxl on reinand.

can i use this tool to clone my emunand to the 2nd sd? and just install new games on it so that i can switch between the two, or would that cause some problems?

I'm having the same problem. The error is "There are some error occurred while moving and resizing FAT partition."

Just wanted to add to the discussion and say this worked perfectly for me transferring from a 32GB to 128GB microSD. The only thing I noticed different was the size of my partition for emuNand, which happened to be around 1.6GB or so. I extended the size of the partition to 2GB before extending the other partition. I'm not sure if it's a coincidence or not but it would appear since then my boot rate has increased!
Win, win!

Edit: Forgot to say thanks for the guide! I appreciate it!

Noob here, i followed this guide and it works. I transfered from a 4gb to 64gb. I can boot it up, and play the 3 games I had on the other SD card.

But there is a problem, i cannot install CIAs anymore using FBI. It gives me the "Summary Invalid Argument" error.

AND!! I found out that my Samsung 64GB Pro SD card is a fake from Taiwan. Is that the reason that ist not letting me install CIAs? Also, whats the deal with fake sd cards why are they bad?

Should i buy an offical SD card or did i do something wrong? Thanks.

I have a question before I begin. So everyone is saying it copies EmuNAND just fine, but i want to make sure that my SysNAND gets copied too right? I have stuff on there I want to keep as well. It says its a 1 to 1 copy of everything on the card, but does that mean everything will boot the same, and be able to load CIA's the same as before (some people mentioned they cannot import new CIAs). I wanted to move from a 32gb SD to 128 and was hoping this was the easiest way to save everything properly

I'm new here but I can answer these questions.

Your SysNAND is actually sitting on the 3DS itself - you can't even access it from your PC.
So no, you won't be copying your SysNAND, BUT it will be exactly as you left it. You don't need to copy it at all, and you'll be able to boot to your EmuNAND like you did before.

Can someone help me i im a *** newbie, i dont have a middle bar, where i need to drag what bar? thanks
From your picture it looks like you're only using a 2GB SD Card - did you forget to restore your backup from the USB Image Tool to the bigger SD Card?
Like, did you forget to take the old one out and put the new one in? If you did you should have been able to see a huge empty space on the right.

However if you DID swap your SD card out and it's meant to be bigger than 2GB I have no idea what happened.

EDIT: I just noticed your SD card is formatted in FAT16. Pretty sure that's the cause of your problem, it should instead definitely be formatted as FAT32. FAT16 only allows for partitions of 4GB total at maximum but defaults to 2GB.
Copy all the files off your SD card to your PC somewhere, reformat it as FAT32 then expand to the right using partition master. THEN copy your files back onto the SD card.

---

Meanwhile, I myself ran into a pretty big problem I saw some others mention here where partition master didn't want to let me expand the partition to the right at all when I hit apply, just giving a generic error.
To get around this I created a new partition on the empty space to the right that you'd normally expand into, deleted the old one, and set the new partition to be primary. I then copied over my SD card files from a backup I made earlier.
I lost out on the 3gb from the deleted partition because I didn't want to try reclaim it in partition master in case I overwrote the EmuNAND (it merges the two "empty" partitions into one) but it works now and that's what matters to me. Kinda crap but eh.

I have some buggy files in my SD that I can't delete normally. I think the only way to delete them is to format the SD card. Can I use this method to format my sd, continue with my emunand and to not transfer all the files?

Try just formatting the card via windows since it can only see the partition that hasn't got the emunand on it. If you want to be really sure you can also just use partition master to format the rightmost partition.
Make sure you backup your card with the USB Image Tool first though, just in case as well as all the files that aren't the buggy undeleteable ones. You'll need to copy those back on after it's done formatting since it'll wipe the card.

Also the only other time I ran into this was with a PSP memory stick and that ended up being a badly corrupted card so if it happens again... well you'll need to replace the SD card.

I just did this the other day, it's literally a clone of your old SD card so everything should transfer fine. I had a couple of CIAs and themes installed and they showed up fine once it was done.
Make sure you backup the files from your SD card to your PC first in case something doesn't survive the journey - then you can just copy it back.

Also make sure the 64GB card is formatted in FAT32.

@Azba

I've followed the guide correctly but I'm getting an error on Number 8. Whenever I try to resize completely to the right and click "apply" I get this: "found some error on the operating partition, please fix the error and try again. I'm using their pro license if that helps.

I'm trying to transfer from a 4GB SD card to 32GB.

Looks like you ran into the same problem that I did along with a couple of other users.
Here's some things you can try:

  • Copy off all your data on the SD card elsewhere (say, into a folder on your desktop) then format the middle partition using partition master. Once that's done, try adjusting the size to the right again as before and then copy your stuff back onto the SD card.
  • Try an older version of partition master (don't know where you'd find it)

As for myself, I didn't manage to figure out what was causing it, what I ended up doing fixed it but I lost out on 3GB.
Here's what I did:
  1. Copy all your SD card data off onto your PC for later
  2. Use partition master to create a new partition on the "unallocated space" to the right, making sure you still have the 1GB "Unallocated space" on the left still there
  3. Delete the middle partition (this is what I did, you should maybe see if you can merge it with the new partition on the right and see if that works.)
  4. Apply the changes without adjusting the right partition's size (the 3GB from the old partition gets merged with the 1GB of "unallocated space" where the emunand is, so it's no longer safe to expand into it)
  5. Assign a drive letter to the right partition and apply
  6. Copy your SD card files back on from your desktop
  7. Done!
Good luck. If my suggestion in step 3 works please tell us!

I'm trying to copy the files on my sd card to a temporary folder on my desktop and I'm getting an error. I can't delete it either. All my files have this weird "USBCÉ3à" name on it after using that backup tool in the guide? Any ideas?
