The guys over at 24C3 just demoed a Wii hack that is set to provide native Wii
homebrew in the near future (not running in GC mode, and with full access to all the Wii hardware!)

They were able to find encryption and decryption keys by doing full memory
dumps at runtime over a custom serial interface. Using these keys, they were
able to create a Wii ‘game’ that ran their own code (their demo happened to show live sensor/Wiimote information, amongst a few other things).

Wahou!!

I'm not sure if I understand fully: is it a hardware or software mod? (hoping for software, it would be incredible!

From what it looks like it seems to be a software mod relying on drivechip to run the code from a burned dvd. If they were able to encrypt/decrypt data they could easily decrypt a full game structure and make their *own game*. The news is suggesting this.
But it could be a hoax, be wary.

Assuming it is true it is very similar to how HDDVD was first done (same as a whole bunch of hacks though), I have to wonder if Nintendo has a revocation scheme. Still I would have taken a buffer overflow but anything that kicks it all off.

I would like to see this turn into some rom (iso?) hacks too.

now we need some good coders to come on board

No, we need a devkit and/or a Wii library.

I suppose this is one occasion where the wii being a "gamecube 1.5" is a bonus (there is already some serious stuff in place for powerpc and the GC), the wii remote, which lets face it is all people are really going to want at first, already has some halfway official stuff (the web/flash thing) and has been used to drive just about everything on a PC.

  • NinStar @ NinStar:
are you using haxchi, tiramisu or aroma?
  • crafthp434 @ crafthp434:
    yeah
  • NinStar @ NinStar:
no, I'm asking which one of them you are using
  • crafthp434 @ crafthp434:
    aroma
  • NinStar @ NinStar:
in that case, there is no such thing as homebrew launcher for aroma
  • NinStar @ NinStar:
you have to launch your homebrews directly from the wii u menu
  • NinStar @ NinStar:
there is a plugin that display them on the wii u menu, pretty sure it is enabled by default
  • crafthp434 @ crafthp434:
    so like it doesnt exist
  • crafthp434 @ crafthp434:
    yeah
    ?
  • NinStar @ NinStar:
it doesn't exist, at least not for aroma
  • crafthp434 @ crafthp434:
    ohhhhh
  • NinStar @ NinStar:
on tiramisu you can access it by opening mii maker
  • crafthp434 @ crafthp434:
    okay
  • NinStar @ NinStar:
I don't have a wii u anymore to test it myself, but if homebrews are not visible on the wii u menu I think you can press L + R + minus to open the plugin menu, there should be an option called "homebrews on wii u menu" or something similar
  • crafthp434 @ crafthp434:
    nope
  • crafthp434 @ crafthp434:
    it is L+dpad down+ select
  • crafthp434 @ crafthp434:
but homebrew is appearing in the home menu btw
  • NinStar @ NinStar:
    yes, now I remember it
  • NinStar @ NinStar:
then it is working, I also don't like that they did this but it is the only option you have if you are using aroma
  • crafthp434 @ crafthp434:
i just didint know the homebrew launcher didint exist in aroma
  • crafthp434 @ crafthp434:
