I want to replay Tales of Symphonia some time soon. My copy is PAL, but after seeing how much smoother it runs at 60Hz I'd like to play it at that speed this time around. Unfortunately, I find the font in the NTSC version horrendous to read for any extended period. This is something they fixed in the PAL version, but it doesn't include a 60Hz mode like many GC games did and doesn't seem to work with generic "force PAL60" hacks.
This will undoubtedly seem silly to some, but does anyone know of a way I can get the best of both worlds? If not, I'll probably play the PAL version and put up with the slowness - I hate the font that much. :P

The PC port is kinda bad on Steam, the PS3 port is more stable.
I have the ps3 HD collection, a bit disappointed, is not 60FPS playing the first game but the second one is. Also, is 720P not 1080P, but besides those things is pretty normal. It looks good and sharp, has multiple voice languages, costumes from other tales games and the ps2 enhanced features that was only exclusive to JAP.

So far the people who said the steam version was bad seem like cause it was advertised wrong. It says it was the gamecube port but it was based on the ps3 HD remaster which is based on the ps2 game. There is probably more that i didn't get when they complained about the pc port, but I'm happy with the ps3 game i have.

The PC port got better. Now my only problems are with the game itself. :P

That's true enough, wish they based it off the Gamecube version and not lock it to 30 fps :P

Yeah, there were some scathing reviews on Steam about that, someone else handled the port and didn't do a very good job, not to mention the horrid DRM it uses, but I digress. I don't know how easy it is to mod the game though, or patch it as the OP requested ><

Isn't it possible that the dolphin emu can make the gamecube game look just as good as the pc port and play at 60FPS? I mean it has 1080P support. :P

But i still like the HD features, the costumes are cool and there is some extra attacks i think. Basically i would advised ignoring most steam game reviews. most of them are very strict about what they do like and don't like with sometimes not being fair, and is not just for this game. But the negative reviews had it coming, the false advertisement and not having 60 FPS is just not what pc games do. I don't remember the last time in past 5 years a game for pc was not in 60 FPS.

First off, have you tried replacing the font already?

I'm not entirely sure how - both on the unpacking/packing front and also where the font might be stored.

I don't actually have a PS3 and the Steam version is out of the question due to DRM. Any pointing in the direction of how to swap fonts would be appreciated, I'm just not sure what files to look out for.

Yeah, Dolphin runs the game at 1080p 60 fps and looks as good as the PC port, it was stupid of them to base it off the PS3 version.

So, I've been looking in the respective ISOs and it appears the PAL version contains all the US fonts and then a few extra font files unique to the PAL version. I'm struggling to work out which to swap as I don't know how to view said font files. They have the extension .dat which could basically mean anything.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.

It inserts a newline in a random spot.
