Homebrew coder and sole maintainer of AGameAWeek.com, Jayenkai, is the creator behind SpikeDislike, a puzzle-platformer for iOS, Android, and the DS. More recently, a demake by Ryan Carson has been released for the Nintendo Game Boy. You can grab the file via the link below. If you own a GB flash kit, please comment and let us know how the game runs on actual hardware.

Hey there!

Thanks for the comments on my Demake of Spike Dislike. It was surprisingly fun to make, the constraints of the gameboy meant I had to plan things through in a different manner to my usual environment of Unity3D. I'm beginning the process of demaking a game I have in development called They Are Everywhere (http://www.they-are-everywhere.co.uk/) onto the Gameboy. Not sure how long it'll take but I'll be posting on twitter (@refreshgamesuk) when things are happening!

Thanks again to Jayenkai for being so cool with me coding this up :)

Oh, hey, it's cool that you joined the forum ^_^ Always nice to see official game devs! Hope to see more of you around in time!

On another note, I really like the whole demaking idea, it's cool to see modern games in a retro setting :)

Just a quick update for anyone interested, my second GB game has been coming along slowly over the last month, in the odd evening after work, etc, etc.

It's a port of a game I've been working on for more recent mobile platforms, iOS, etc. But I thought it might work well on the Gameboy, of all the things! Here's a lil GIF of the game in-progress:

I've grabbed a flash cart and a gameboy pocket, which has recently died sooo I quickly bought another from eBay and, yeah, It's been fun, tough, but fun!

Will try to post updates on here more often :)

Is it possible to add background music to your games?, while the effects are cool as heck, you might be interested in composing the soundtrack for your games, just a suggestion though, if you feel like that is just too much work, you can leave it as it is.

I've been chatting to someone about possibilities with geting the source files of the music I paid them to make for the main game a while ago, but it seems that that's unlikely to happen. Short of me making some form of auto tool to convert the mp3 via fast fourier transform, into a bunch of frequencies (and that not sounding like garbage) it's going to be pretty tough.

Still, I have the first 4 levels ready now, just figuring out how to set-up and get the first boss fight working currently.

Boss fight is there now, had a few issues with sound effects which I'm happy to say are fixed up now.

After looking into a few ways to get a game onto an actual cart, I've found what seems to be a possibility. It just takes a bit more effort, thankfully I've managed to get a hold of most of the hardware I'm going to need and aside from the soldering work, looks fairly simple. My supply of flash chips showed up recently, along with a chip programmer. So, things are still moving along with the game.

Sound stuff is coming along nicely, but It almost certainly looks like I'll be doing that myself. Ahh well, I'll do my best on that, can't promise deliciousness on the audio front though ;)

Okay, I met an awesome chiptune artist at a fairly local gamedev place who was performing using the popular Gameboy tracker LSDJ, long story short, it looks like my music problems may be solved! More bug fixes and code organisation and jiggling the first boss around has been tough but rewarding, there's 1/5th of the game there now! Just the other 4/5 to go,haha...ahhhhh :P

Yeah, I'm pretty excited about this too :)

I coded up another couple of ROMs for lil game jams, nothing amazing, but not bad for a short amount of time, here's the links:

Novascape - Made For Ludum Dare 34 over the course of two days

Space Invasion 0 - Made for the Ludum Dare Warmup Weekend in a few hours, just a lil invaders clone.
