Shovel Knight actually can't run on an NES unmodified. It uses a few colors the NES does not have access to and it would take up way too much space. The music alone would fill up an NES cartridge.

I was thinking exaclty that about the music. Snes cant just play digital music, it has a bunch of oscillators to generate sound,it can not play samples\tracks as far as i known.

I tried the game out on GameYob DS. It's very basic but it works and runs well.
Honestly, say Yacht Club decided to port Shovel Knight to retro consoles for whatever reason, I'd be surprised if they could port it to the SNES without cutting some noticeable corner. They did work very hard to make it look and sound like a retro game, but there's more to games than those. I imagine under the hood, it's very different.

Though, I do find demakes interesting. I kind of wish more was done with Super Smash Land.

You can play full quality sound on a SNES with a custom chip called MSU-1. Here's a video of an A Link to the Past mod that includes hi-def music and even FMVs:

This is the sound chip we deserved, but never got... :( The Sega Genesis had some fancy sound chips in it, if I remember correctly.

You would have to completely remix the music in FamiTracker, then it would be the correct format/filesize

IIRC one of the Shovel Knight devs said all the music as it currently is can be played on an NES, there's just too much of it.

The problem its that all is made to be hd-like, so everything occupies way too much space for a Snes cartridge. Also there's the processors capacity (either for the graphics system and the audio-unity processor) which i doubt can handle too many things. There was several limitations that developers should by pass at this time.

I guess that if shovel knight would receive a snes version the best possible result of image + audio quality would be something in the Donkey Kong way. That game basically pushed snes to the limit. (excluding the use o primal 3d which was possibly later on with the Super FX chip on cartridges.)

I thought Shovel Knight was supposed to be NES, not SNES?

From what I understand, if someone were to make a custom cartridge with extra capacity, it would most likely work on a NES. Maybe it would work if someone made a custom rom on a flashcart?

Never mind how hard it would be to port the whole game (and I'm not sure the NES has the beef required to run all the enemy AI and stuff), it also uses colors the NES does not support (like purple). You'd need to remake a bunch of graphics too.

This topic is kinda getting derailed is it not. As to try to keep this attention on the topic...This looks great. I'll have to whip out an emulator later to play it. I just finished Spike Dislike 3 which is a really nice game if you like this demake.
