Sony finally allows crossplay in Fortnite, other titles coming soon

FN.jpg

Over the last few months, there has been much controversy over Sony's approach to cross-platform multiplayer. From locking gamers to their own platform in Fortnite to claiming that Playstation is the superior platform, Playstation have had a plethora of excuses to justify their decisions.

Today, Sony published a blog post on their official blog, announcing that they are finally looking into the matter. Starting from today, Fortnite players on Playstation 4 will be able to play with other players on Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Windows, and Mac. Right now, it is being called an 'open beta', and Sony is still claiming that playing is 'best on Playstation'.

Sony will also be looking into crossplay in other third-party titles in the future.

Following a comprehensive evaluation process, SIE has identified a path toward supporting cross-platform features for select third party content. We recognize that PS4 players have been eagerly awaiting an update, and we appreciate the community’s continued patience as we have navigated through this issue to find a solution.

The first step will be an open beta beginning today for Fortnite that will allow for cross platform gameplay, progression and commerce across PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Mac operating systems. We see the beta as an opportunity to conduct thorough testing that ensures cross-platform play is best on PlayStation, while being mindful about the user experience from both a technical and social perspective.

For 24 years, we have strived to deliver the best gaming experience to our fans by providing a uniquely PlayStation perspective. Today, the communities around some games have evolved to the point where cross-platform experiences add significant value to players. In recognition of this, we have completed a thorough analysis of the business mechanics required to ensure that the PlayStation experience for our users remains intact today, and in the future, as we look to open up the platform.

This represents a major policy change for SIE, and we are now in the planning process across the organization to support this change. We will update the community once we have more details to share, including more specifics regarding the beta timeframe, and what this means for other titles going forward.

Is this the real life, is this just fantasy?

Seriously though, I really wasn't expecting this. This is great for ps users and I'll finally be able to play with some friends that use the ps version. Hopefully this means that PS4 will get the bedrock version of Minecraft now that crossplay is a thing. Looking forward to seeing what other games are opened up for crossplay!

I see what you did there.

Oh shit, now how will the Nintendo fanboys prove that Nintendo is more consumer friendly than Sony!?

Are they seriously claiming that Fortnite plays better on PS4 than on PC?
Sony has always allowed crossplay with PC

Now that's just ignorant.
He's not wrong

PS4 is far better than XB1 and Switch, let's be real here. Sony has always allowed crossplay on PC too
Well XB1 has like no exclusives and PS4 has been out a lot longer than Switch so it's hardly a fair comparison. Can't really disagree with it though, even if i personally am more of a Nintendo guy.

BTW guys some of the companies you should also be taking to task could careless about this.

Saw someone ask about the Fallout 76 and Bethesda is saying cross play isn't even a concern and they don't care about now. But don't worry with Legends you'll have cross play so that all the money you spend on cards will be marginally more useful?

PlayStation fanboys were against this because of how stubborn Sony was being. Glad they're allowing it now.

Fuck those plastic lovers.

Even though Xbox has little to no exclusives that's not relevant for most people who just want to play and watch stuff on it. Nintendo has subjectively the best exclusives but once I'm done with them, I don't see any point playing it again whereas having a vast library of quality third party games helps a lot in having a meaty catalog of games to play.

I still use my 360 these days and I usually just play Forza 4 and PES 18 Lite (= Demo with a bit more options) on it. I do have a ton of games installed on it but don't care about them.

An XBox One is good if you don't have a gaming PC, if you do it's kind of pointless.

"Beta"and "select third-party games" just a better way to put "we're only doing this cuz we have to and as soon as this game dies we're gonna block it again and we'll lock even more accounts!"

It probably won't, Minecraft does not have enough players for Sony to even consider cross-platform for it.
Another reason.
Also Minecraft was supposed to be the first cross platform game for Sony if they hadn't cock blocked it.

Sony already had some cross-play games before the whole Minecraft cross-play thing. So no, Minecraft would have not been the first.
