SEGA publishes business plans, intends to revive older IPs

image.jpeg

Another end of the fiscal year has come and gone, and with it come plans for game companies to improve upon themselves. SEGA is no different, as they have published a document detailing some of their plans in a "Road to 2020" business presentation. An interesting thing to note is that SEGA's profits have increased, and have almost fully recovered, after two years of decline. (FY 2015, 2016) SEGA's gaming branch main goals are also stated: create titles that aren't just a hit in Japan, but worldwide as well, trying to revive popular older intellectual properties, and focusing on the sizeable and ever-growing western PC market. This report comes directly after announcements of Steam ports of two popular SEGA-published games, Bayonetta and Vanquish, both reaching Steam's top sellers list. Which IPs the Japanese company intends to revive are unknown, but keep your eyes out for more news on the matter.

  • Expand existing IPs and obtain new IPs for North American and European PC games
  • Build revenue base by being entrusted with outsourced development
  • Challenge for new IPs
  • Revival of major IPs
  • Effective utilization of development engines

Sinnoh confirmed...oh wait. Resurrect Shinobi? Golden Axe? I only played the Genesis and Shinobi 2 and Golden Axe were in a 6 pak cartridge with Sonic, Columns, Super Hang On and Streets of Rage. OH! Streets of Rage, that's a Sega property? Yeah, I wish them luck, with how chill they are with Sonic fanmade games and what I think is approving nods over Bayonetta PC modes (saw nude ones recently), it's hard to dislike Sega. As opposed to Nintendo, who sometimes, admittedly as a "fanboy" pull some shit that make them unlikable at times.

Gunstar Heroes, Comix Zone, Crazy Taxi and Skies of Arcadia. I hope we get another Sonic & All Stars title too.

House of the Dead

I'm a fan of the series but I think the light gun genre as far as on consoles is a dead genre. I accidently discovered there's been a Time Crisis 5 in arcades for over 2 years now but they're probably not going to make a gun on PS4/Xbox one just for that game and Namco was always the one making light guns on consoles. If there's a new HOTD it would most likely be in arcades only.

I definitely want to see Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, and Phantasy Star make a comeback, I may not have been a Sega boy, but I do like those games a lot.

I always thought IP stands for Interactive Product.
I originally thought it meant Individual Property, "Interactive Product" doesn't seem to work in this case.

@seam We're not exactly professionals, so we can't match the quality of articles posted at the large sites.

Alex Kidd would be nice to see again, though only if it remains spiritually in tune with it's initial release... and maybe Shinobi World.

Kenseiden would of course be a must

Shinobi/Shadow Dancer

And lastly, Miracle Warriors, Sword of Vermillion, and Phantasy Star, but as they were back in the day, I don't want that modern Pokemon, Square, Yugioh looking bull shit. Also good story writing much be intact as well!

That said, it's nice to see that they seem to finally be realizing that Sonic can only carry them so far.

Not sure if it's already been mentioned, but I'd like a sequel to Ristar, preferably in the same style as Sonic Mania. That'd be cool.

If they want to revive some old IPs to make them like the current gen shits it is better not in this case.
Eg: looks at Double Dragon Neon, that was in pseudo-3D; its a totally trash. Now imagine same fate for Streets of Rage or Guardian Heroes...

tbh would a street of rages game even work nowadays? beaten ups are long gone and pask and while there are adventure beaten up they usualy include noone human enemies nowadays imagine a game like devil may cry and kratos but your only enemies would be humans, it would look preety meh and get boring fast imo so tbh i have no idea how a beaten up with only human enemys would work on this day and age.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
