Reuters claims Vivendi takeover of Ubisoft is to happen this year

It looks like things are getting even more bleak for Ubisoft, as Vivendi slowly advances in on a hostile takeover of the company. The London-based financial news source, Reuters, claims that reliable sources have said that Vivendi will be acquiring more video game studios this year, starting with Ubisoft and Havas (the latter of which is an advertising group). There will be a shareholder's meeting next Tuesday, where more details about Vivendi's future plans will be revealed. Although, it appears Vivendi itself isn't without its own problems, as Reuters also discussed that shares for the company have fallen, and market analysts are wary of the lack of transparency with Vivendi. Only time will tell what will happen for sure, and what this means for Ubisoft, but prospects for Yves Guillemot to remain as CEO at Ubi are looking bleak.

I know it was an under rated series. Though ubisoft was part of the creating of Grandia I and II both were amazing games with great stories and gameplay although a few monsters just had new skin colors it didn't make the story any less thrilling. However the rest of the series xtreme/ grandia 3/ parallel never had ubisoft and they were what destroyed the series. Not saying it's cause they didn't have ubisoft I just think at that time they were fighting against final fantasy and tried to pour out the best content they could. One which the gameplay mechanics are still being used today with games like child of light.

Ubisoft, Activision/Blizzard, EA. So, soon Vivendi has had it's hands on all the game companies I already boycott due to horrible practices and mediocre so called AAA-games.

Ubisoft has pissed so many times over it's playerbase the company would be better off dying. I'm baffled whoever still wants to support them.

Bad dlc practices? Check.
Selling unfinished games? Check.
Selling nostalgia while fucking up the HD remake? Check.
Selling old games without expansions for twice the price? Check.
Milking series to the end? Check.
Fucking up online services? Check.
Forcing DRM down our throats? Check.
Requiring their own shitty proprietary game service? Check.
Bullshots and constant lying to their customers? Check.

Some hits have been made under Ubisoft's name (Trials Evolution, Rayman Origins/Legends), but praying for sequels and more sequels will backfire sooner or later...

I don't know much about economics, but isn't this taking a while for a hostile takeover?
Vivendi already owns 25% of Ubisoft so they only need another 25.01% of the stock in order to force a sale or find the share holders holding that % to agree. Which would explain the slow process. Hostile take overs are usually done as a last resort especially when you have a group/share holder that's willing to fight.

I see a lot of folks here are criticising Vivendi that they're going to do this and that but actually, imo, things might get better. A lot better. The Crash Bandicoot games published by Vivendi were tons of fun and resembled the original CB titles on newer consoles (at the time, it was on OX, PS2, GC) whereas the Crash Bandicoot games by Activision are just awful and totally miss the charm they should have had.

Splinter Cell died when they turned Conviction into an action game, and died further when they replaced the iconic Michael Ironside with some kid.
Fisher on Conviction was the last time voiced by Ironside. I liked the game but it wasn't really Splinter Cell.

I mean, seriously, they completely removed the analog movement speed so you couldn't sneak in the shadows, and there was no hiding of bodies. Instead you had a "kill everyone" button.

Gonna agree on TwinSanity (although quite different) but disagree on The Wrath of Cortex. That game, although looks simillar, just don't quite catch it IMO.

If this happens, I hope they make some bad investments like finally continuing 2008's PoP :D

I will admit that one does seem more interesting than the usual Ambernic ones, and I already liked those.

    I dread the price point.

This looks like one of their premium models, so... $150 :glare:

    To me that seems reasonable.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I mean since basically all the games are errmmm free lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I mean yeah sure but the specs are the same as a $50 model, it's just those pesky "quality of life" things driving up the price, like an actually working speaker, or buttons that don't melt, and stuff like that.

I think all in my Pi 4 was well north of 200 bucks 150ish for the Pi 4 the case the fancy cooler, then like 70 for the 500GB MicroSD then like 70 for the Xbox controller. But honestly it's a nice set up I really enjoy and to me was worth every penny. (even bought more controllers for 2 or 4 player games.) hmmm have never played any 2 player games yet :(
  • Veho @ Veho:
Yeah that's what I hate about the RPi, it's supposedly $30 or something but it takes an additional $200 of accessories to actually turn it into a working something.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
yes that's the expensive part lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I mean sure it's flexible and stuff but so is uremum but it's fiddly.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Yeah a lot of it I consider a hobby, using Batocera I am constantly adjusting the collection adding and removing stuff, scraping the artwork. Haven't even started on some music for the theme... Also way down the road I am considering attempting to do a WiiFlow knock off lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I want everything served on a plate plz ktnx, "work" is too much work for me.
  • Veho @ Veho:
Hmm, with that in mind, maybe a complete out-the-box solution with all the games collected, pacthed and optimized for me would be worth $150
