There aren't that many changes done to the core, but the frontend is continually changing. Whether is worth to update is up to you. Most of the work is not related to a particular platform.
can changes to the frontend fix the save/options screen slowdown on NXengine and the fact that the sound becomes distorted using the retroarch menu during gameplay?

NXengine's internal saving is not handled by the frontend (but now that I think about it, it most certainly could). No changes on the frontend would fix this.
The second sounds like a frontend issue yeah.

Try some other ports of NX Engine to see if they suffer the same problem. But is it really a dealbreaker? It stalls for less than half a second, tons of things have this problem.

I'm just questioning downloading nightly builds everyday, as opposed to downloading once a week. It's not a deal breaker at all. The distorted sound is an issue, but not enough to stop playing.

I'm downloading once a week - unless someone mentions a dramatic change on any given day, in which case I'll update straight away.

Lol I figured it out, it does work on gameyob but you think gambette would sound better?
Definitely, Gambatte sound (all libretro cores actually) has better sound.
not that the gameyob sound core is bad, but the timing is sound streams is not perfect, thus causing crackling in sound.
