I keep 3 spares that I don't upgrade and one I upgrade after I make sure there's an update for the supercard dstwo.. two are brand new in sealed box for hawking later when they quit making them. look at prices for old factory sealed nintendo handhelds and you'll see what I mean. and yes I know that means you have to hang onto them for a long time, many years.

So as I understand it, moving to a flash cart prevents you from having to deal with all these firmware issues because the flash cart's producers make sure their own firmware is working fine, right?

Maybe I should look into getting one...but on the other hand, I am waiting for the Gateway too. Decisions, decisions...

The regular DS flashcarts like the DS2 will not allow you to play 3DS games on them. The only exception is probably Gateway and we don't know how that will turn out yet. But yes, if you have a good DS flashcart like the DS2 it should get updated regularly.

Even though we got rom dumps floating around, we still can't tell what firmware update comes with that rom atm, very few sites will bring that up. Games with a firmware payload will only tell you it needs to update, it doesn't tell you what version it will update to. The majority of the games out there have been identified with what firmware payload they carry, but that information is what is scattered. If an online update of the 3DS firmware is done, it will always update to the latest version.

You can goto sites like http://3ds.essh.co/ but they don't list what 3DS firmware comes with certain games. The last time someone asked about firmware updates coming with the game was back in 2011, when no games at that time had a firmware update with it.

you wrong
we can indeed tell what firmware comes with the games from the roms

Under what column on http://3ds.essh.co/ is the firmware that comes with the rom listed?

Under what field is listed is the firmware listed for the rom advanscene 3ds dat for Offlinelist? I don't see one.
offlinelist_3ds_listing.png

Your the one wrong on this one.

---

They didn't say that you couldn't get the info from the ROM, they said you can't find a database of that info online.
Or where is the tool that tells you what firmware comes with a rom. I am talking about the average person, they don't have any special tools yet to tell what that info is yet Rydian.

lol i do the 3ds.essh list
haha
there is a tool that shows it
called 3DS Explorer
displays the rom SDK information so you can see which build of firmware is included,
your the wrong one

we dont post the Firmware version because its not required under the scene release rules

as you can see here
Fire Emblm Eur
Build on 3.1.0-6

Now your just full of it. the 3ds.essh list doesn't list it. The only fields you got listed are:

Code:
<release>
    <id></id>
    <name></name>
    <publisher></publisher>
    <region></region>
    <languages></languages>
    <group></group>
    <imagesize></imagesize>
    <serial></serial>
    <titleid></titleid>
    <imgcrc></imgcrc>
    <filename></filename>
    <releasename></releasename>
</release>

If 3DS Explorer list it, give a screenshot of one listed where it is in the program. You act like I got 3DS roms to go through or something to be able to tell.

---

That isn't a part of any 3DS rom list atm. Currently that type of information is in bits and pieces across multiple sources atm.
Like I said before, don't insist it is part of any list, makes you look more troll.

---

Is the SDK telling you the firmware number of the firmware image on the cart or is that the minimum firmware that the ROM will run with. That is 2 separate and different things about the firmware.

Ok, so there IS a tool? That's great news, then I can just plug the rom into the tool to see the info. It's unfortunate there is no database of that info available online yet but maybe in time.

So far based on everything I know I will probably wait for the Gateway, especially since it's supposed to come out at the end of the month. Thanks all who responded and helped!

Do you not read good?
i said I DO THE LIST ON THE SITE, AS IN IM THE ONE THAT UPDATES IT!, not that it lists it
i gave you a screenshot
and now 3DSGuy has even released the tool that makes it readable for simpletons

the SDK is the UDPATE file thats stored on the rom

I have a quick question. I'm pretty new in regards to the whole 3DS scene. I had a DS/DSi which had an R4 and Acekard 2i respectively, now I understand there is no 3DS Rom emulation available on the 3DS (at the moment anyway). I have never updated my firmware since I first bought my 3DS at launch.

The question is, should I keep holding out and not updating my 3DS in case the older firmware has more vulnerabilities that people could squeeze through? Or should I just update and make use of my friend codes, go on the EShop, play games online etc. (I've never used any of those features, just use the 3DS to practice my OOT speedruns when I'm not home)

If you use any online features of games like mario kart or some other game similar, it has already been proven that an online update to the game can force you to update the system wither you want to or not if your not already on the latest 3DS firmware. On top of that, unless you don't plan to buy any more 3DS games ever again, you can be unlucky enough to run into a 3DS game that has a firmware update. Which leaves you with a choice of either not playing that game or update your 3DS to play that game. You would have to pretty much keep that thing in a shoe box and left alone until an exploit comes around, impractical for those who basically traded their previous handheld for a 3DS.
