@GalladeGuy Just one simple question....
what's your cia installing speed?
iirc, -snip- is SUCK.....
You're not allowed to post the name of that site. Not really sure what you mean, but I have an average download speed of about 4 MB/s on my computer, although it has gotten up to 7, so I imagine my 3DS would be somewhere in the 1.5 MB/s range with its $5 wifi card. :P

Oh lol. I didn't realize you were talking about the file IO. But yeah, it is pretty bad. My class 10 SD Card makes up for it though. :D
iirc, 3ds maximum writing speed is 2MB/s
well..... maybe someone can compare downloading 3ds + drag to msd to cdn cia on console

How long does it take to install ORAS.cia on an o3DS now? an hour or half?
How long does it take to copy a ORAS.3DS file to your micro SD? a minute.

Buh muh CIA stay there. Well, what if I run out of space and don't want it to be there now but later? Uninstall it and take another hour or half to re-install it back? throw away my 8GB and pay more for another 16GB card? or reuse my GW I had since 2014 and hve access to all my .3ds I have on my 3TB hard drive with a single drag and drop.

Try again.
Installing: 10 - 15 minutes assuming you have a good internet connection.
Copying: Over 20 minutes since most people don't have good computers or MSD Card adapters.

Not to mention that installing it is safer, cheaper, and doesn't require access to a computer and SD Card adapter. You can also have a DS flashcard in your 3DS that would normally be taken up by your Gateway card, along with the second SD Card you have to buy for it.

With things like Freeshop and CIAngel, this point doesn't work anymore. With either of those, you can download and install ORAS in maybe 10-15 minutes. I doubt the download speed from whatever shady site is hosting a .3ds file, coupled with time required to write the file to your SD card, beats either of those applications (And if it does, it's not by very much).

The only benefit to Gateway nowadays is cheat support and extended storage. That's literally it.

I hate this CFW vs Gateway shit, it's just as bad as menuhax vs a9lh. Don't you children have better things to do than argue about a binary file and a piece plastic plastic? Getting a girlfriend is an adequate replacement for arguing on internet forums!

However, i will say we should give credit where credit is due. Gateway team developed the MSET hack (albeit with guidance from 3DBrew wiki) and released it to the public in a period of time in the 3DS hacking scene when the devs had no intention of releasing any hacks due to their anti-piracy stance.

And it's also noteworthy to mention that Gateway also developed and publicised the concept of an emuNAND. Yes yes, i know, it's essentially defunct now in more recent years. But for a long time emuNAND was a fundamental concept of 3DS hacking and progressed the scene forward exponentially.

I'm fully aware that other devs achieved emuNAND, but did they release it or have intention of releasing it? Nope!

On the other side of the fence, the two bricking fiasco's are inexcusable. They lost a lot of my respect for that, despite me being a supporter and user of Gateway products.

However, history has shown us that that even homebrew devs can be evil sometimes. Judging by the posts in this thread, I highly doubt anyone here is old enough to remember the days of the DS scene. During the days of FlashMe, a respected homebrew developer released firmware that PURPOSELY perma-bricked unsuspecting users DS units.

It's not just the big evil corporate machine engaging in questionable behaviour....

Here in the USA, I just bought a 32GB microSD card for 12 dollars. With time, I expect flash memory to continue to drop. I honestly don't see why people complain about paying for flash memory, when a huge majority of users don't even buy their games. At least put that money towards the hardware.

Anyways, I like my Gateway for cheats. I will say this again. NTR Cheats would have probably eclipsed and leapt over GW's cheats, had NTR been an open-source project. Anyways, for being free, you can't complain, especially for non-GW users.

However, I am not blind to GW's shortcomings, like their horrible GW-A9LH. At this point, I just stay out of threads of GW users who tried installing GW-A9LH and it ended up horribly. Since I feel those GW users want to brick even though GW has said that only advance users should even be using their GW-A9LH Installer.

It bothers the fuck out of me how people are still defending something that is so obviously fucking inferior, just because they feel stupid for buying a gateway card. We know you're trying to defend your purchase, but please, stop embarrassing yourselves. It's just sad now.

So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds

It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space
