Hi everyone,

i have successfully started linux on my CUH-2016B slim.
In theory this should work on all models that had problems before (12xx / 20xx / 70xx) but i only have a CUH-2016B Slim with 4.05.

There is no video output yet. the problem is that the HDMI encoder chip is another model than those in the 10xx ps4 models (MN864729 vs the old MN86471A).
The code is in ps4-linux -> drivers + gpu + drm + radeon + ps4_bridge.c

as a workaround i have included DisplayLink USB Adapter support. This should work, but i have to order one to test it.

the last kernel build also includes support for docker, thats what i was hoping for initially and now i have it working :)

Here is what i have done so far:

  1. compile a ps4pro compatible kernel
    • there has been a bug on newer linux/gcc versions but other then that it was straightforward

      $ make
  2. include a reverse shell
    • sets eth0 to a static IP address and for the sake of simplicity i just generated some initramfs for common IPs.
    • The PS4 IP will always be .245 (e.g. for 192.168.0 it will be 192.168.0.245)
    • on your Host you have to open Port 1337 and the IP has to be .244 (you can change that inside the initframfs if you know how)
  3. directly boot from 2nd USB
    • wait 1 min after boot then mount 2nd USB ( /dev/sdb2 ) and boot (make sure your partition layout matches)

Usage
  • copy bzImage and the matching initramfs.cpio.gz to USB
  • use normal PS4 Linux Loader payload (as an exploit i used IDC and specter)
  • FOR REVERSE SHELL
    • open Port 1337 with netcat
      Code:
      nc -l -p 1337 </dev/stdin
    • once PS4 linux has started you should see a shell prompt in your terminal! :)
  • FOR USB BOOT
    • wait until the power LED turns blue with white pulses every 2 seconds.
    • insert 2nd USB drive and wait
I'm not sure if this fedora image is setup to run sshd on startup, so you may need to generate a hostkey and systemd symlink. same with networking (i setup everything static)

2. Thanks for the tip, i did compile a new kernel and the size is now more in line (5.5 MB). Maybe there was some crud leftover, i used make mrproper and now it fits.

i also have some more errors from xorg. i just patched to xf86-video-ati driver but drm/mesa is still missing. looks like it detects the gpu as liverpool.
i think the provided fedora is too old. maybe i'll setup ubuntu or a more recent version.

it seems that the problem is the ps4_bridge (between apu and HDMI output). The normal PS4 uses Panasonic MN86471a hdmi transmitter and the slim/pro uses the Panasonic MN864729 HDMI transmitter.

it seems that the problem is the ps4_bridge (between apu and HDMI output). The normal PS4 uses Panasonic MN86471a hdmi transmitter and the slim/pro uses the Panasonic MN864729 HDMI transmitter.
The implementation is done here:
ps4-linux/drivers/gpu/drm/radeon/ps4_bridge.c
yup, thats where i'm stuck right now.

i'd need to know the right registers for the MN864729.

but at least i have built a kernel with support for displaylink usb adapters :mellow:

It does not look like the datasheet is publicly available for the MN864729 IC. If pins or traces are accessible we could probably dump the initialisation with a i2c sniffer

I'm currently trying to dump the communication with the new IC but I need to find the right SCA/SCL for it. I'm using the ones on A02-COL2 right now (pin 17,18) but only get messages to addresses 4c and 5d and nothing that looks like the init sequence....
Anybody has an idea where the other lines are on Pro boards?
