It seems that the Xkey team? has started working on a PS3 ODDE.

It's already confirmed legit by several sites.

Advantages of the ODDE are that you won't be stuck to CFW so it can run on OFW.
It's also said that you can rip your own PS3 games to an external HDD with it.
Their hoping on a "end of the year" release.

Edit:
I completely forgot to add that your PS3 will need to be on 3.55 or a CFW to get the Blu-ray drive keys dumped.
After that you can update it to the current OFW.
However the team is exploring other options on how to dump the keys.
Thanks again PsionicRoshambo for pointing this error out!

One added piece of information is that you need to be on some form of CFW when you install this as you need to dump your keys from your drive, after you have your keys you can run what ever firmware you want.

Looks tasty as long as it's relatively stealthy. This could be perfect as far as PSN woes are concerned - Sony and CFW users are constantly at a tug o' war in that area.

So my ps3 can be on CFW, the modchip can be installed, then upgraded and till on CFW?

Yep.
The team will release an extraction utility that will dump the keys for you.
Then it's a matter of plugging it in.
Updating the PS3
And enjoying it ;]

If they don't get it sorted for non-cfw users, is there really that much of a market for it? Most games seem to be getting fixes for cfw now, so it would be giving up homebrew, loaders with game covers etc, maybe psn games (are these cracked? I don't really keep up with ps3 stuff) for playing online and more than likely at quite an expense, 360 version is £70-80 or so, can see this being the same, just for online play?

Are people really that obsessed with having backups and online?

Some people want to play online with a backup pirated copy. If the backups cannot be played online(mass bannings may happen :( )and online passes become used more frequently which is happening this won't sell well.

Believe me.
People even demand online play with pirated games.
I've had people actually saying that if they get banned for their flashed drive that I should refund them a new 360.

They want online play and pirate games.
With the least amount of money spend on it.

It gives the entire modding scene a bad name when people play their "backed up" copies online. I don't care about piracy, but when people feel they should be entitled to use a service without paying I start to get angry. If you can do it, then you can, just accept the inevitable ban.

Damn, crazy people. Want drive flashed, but don't want to accept the risk. Don't know what's happened, people were perfectly happy with backups for offline and originals online with the original xbox. Now they don't just want it, but demand it.

I suppose it doesn't matter now, as the games need everything, but I wonder if back when you could get away with just the security sector and nothing else (if you were staying offline), c4e had just said, screw it, keep em offline. I guess the rage that followed would have been massive.

Well with the 360 you have to pay for live so you pay for it but still Sony will counter with something that may be a massive amount of bans, drive flashes and or firmware upgrades.

People are just becoming more and more entitled me included sometimes.

If I get banned on my flashed box then I get banned.
I'll get another 360 and flash it and play online again.
I don't play online tho but I do use XBLive for voicechat and messaging sometimes.

Indeed it's a shame my 360 will be banned but meh.
I knew there is a risk of getting banned (didn't happen as of today) and I just accept it.
I have a perfectly good RGH atm and if CPU key retrieval is possible on 15574 then I'll extract it on my flashed box.
So that I at least have a good use for it xd.

Yep.
No matter how many times you tell them that it's their responsibility and their fault if they get banned they will hold you responsible.
I guess that the immature children nowadays think that everything is possible.
As soon as a console is released they think it's already hacked.
They think they can just stick an SD card in it and it'll be hacked somehow.

Bloody people think they can get everything for free these days >__>
Even too damn cheap to pay for some quality DVD's
Damnit people a fucking stack of 50 DL DVD's from Verbatim should only cost as much of a new retail 360 game!
But ohh no
They want to play them from a external HDD without having to buy an ODDE 'cause that would cost them money they "don't have" or "can't afford"
Then why have a PS3/360 in the first place!
*sighs*
Bloody people >__>

Sorry for derailing the thread and making it into a personal rant xd

Yeah
Hacking of consoles these days have become way to easy, just look at the Wii.
People expect they can achieve the same with consoles far more secure then the Wii.

Wait... What?
Can someone explain this to me? Slowly?
Just in case no one else explained it better, let me give it a shot.
Take a PS3 on CFW 3.55, get some tech info to put into the magical machinery (modchip) you just installed on your PS3. Then update your PS3 to the latest OFW, have PSN access, and be able to still play backups. The magical machinery is like a hardware version of multiMAN, making the PS3 read a section of its internal hard drive instead of the disk drive.

Regardless of PSN access, I'd LOVE this. Assuming the drive keys aren't a hassle to obtain on CFW and that the installation doesn't require any soldering (if it does, I could always have my dad do it, advantages of having an electrician for a father), I'll have little to no reason to be on CFW, and would allow me to actually buy and play upcoming PS3 exclusives since I'll be on OFW. Piracy and capitalism wrapped up in one neat package.

Would you still need CFW at the beginning of the installation to "marry" the ODDE with the PS3, or it's more of a middleman between the drive and the system like the WODE?

@AncientBoi, Yeah, believe you can do PSP games as well. But a Pi5 is much powerful in comparison.

Not sure about other models of Pi4 but the Pi 4 B with 8GBs OCed to 2Ghz handles PSP really great except like 1 game I found and it is playable it just looks bad lol Motor Storm Arctic something or other.

Other games I can have turned up to like 2X and all kinds of enhancements, Motorstorm hmmm nope 1X and no enhancements lol

  • Veho @ Veho:
I mean yeah sure but the specs are the same as a $50 model, it's just those pesky "quality of life" things driving up the price, like an actually working speaker, or buttons that don't melt, and stuff like that.

I think all in my Pi 4 was well north of 200 bucks 150ish for the Pi 4 the case the fancy cooler, then like 70 for the 500GB MicroSD then like 70 for the Xbox controller. But honestly it's a nice set up I really enjoy and to me was worth every penny. (even bought more controllers for 2 or 4 player games.) hmmm have never played any 2 player games yet :(
  • Veho @ Veho:
Yeah that's what I hate about the RPi, it's supposedly $30 or something but it takes an additional $200 of accessories to actually turn it into a working something.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
yes that's the expensive part lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I mean sure it's flexible and stuff but so is uremum but it's fiddly.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Yeah a lot of it I consider a hobby, using Batocera I am constantly adjusting the collection adding and removing stuff, scraping the artwork. Haven't even started on some music for the theme... Also way down the road I am considering attempting to do a WiiFlow knock off lol

I want everything served on a plate plz ktnx, "work" is too much work for me.
  • Veho @ Veho:
Hmm, with that in mind, maybe a complete out-the-box solution with all the games collected, pacthed and optimized for me would be worth $150
