PS1/2 PS2 backup methods

So I just modded my Slimline and all is rather swell - have FMCB installed and I'm not sure what the other apps that are on my USB do (like ESR, which I think is the app needed to boot patched games on DVDs). However, I'd prefer to run games off an external HDD over DVD because, well, convenience.
I've heard of HD Advance, or whatever it's called and I've tried looking them up but the sites I see are all either in Engrish or dead links.
Anyone here able to point me in the right direction?

Install Open PS2 Loader v0.8 best compatability, if you want to you can just rename OPNPS2LD.ELF too HDLOADER.ELF and place it in the "install" folder with Free_McBootv1.8 installer.
