I was using free proxies to do that, but that's nice to know.

I usually went with a free proxy when that happened. some are unstable though, so I always went with one in Japan.

I lived in Japan for a while and had internet. the internet wasn't much faster, but the upload was compared with what I had in the US.

A user generated list of timecodes and their corresponding videos and in said videos you can skip to whatever timecode you like? Functionally it is not really much different to general adblock, might even be easier as wild cards are less of a thing you need to contemplate.

It is harder to do advert detection like the old days of TIVO where increased volume, advert indicators (in the UK the little square in the top corner) whatever else were a thing, though I have some ideas.

I'd have to teach my dad how to use it. he's one of those people who gets very frustrated with learning something new. I had to make signing into ebay as easy as possible.

I might need a vpn when spying on @JuanMena or @Hayato213 . though, with the latter, I just look into his window.

PIA is super easy, just a right-click, connect, in the taskbar. But if it were my dad, he'd never understand so I get it lol.

Sometimes I just plain forget to connect, myself, and bam, I get an intrusive AT&T warning letter the next week...

A VPN does not do much for your privacy. There are legitimate (and less legitimate) uses for them, but the #1 advertised feature, privacy, is not really one. Most websites and anywhere that requires logging in or providing personal details is SSL encrypted already so nobody can see your traffic. VPNs are good for spoofing your location, and for avoiding your torrent traffic being traced back to you, but that is about all they are good for for most people.

After getting a few copyright strikes myself as a massive pirate, and having my main email account hacked into and stolen last month... I have no choice really but to take my online privacy seriously.

1.) Never use your real name, phone number, social security number, or address online except for official government work, or where legally obliged.

2.) Always use a VPN as a bare minimum. Strong passwords, two-factor authentication, and backup accounts are a MUST!

3.) If you give away or donate electronic devices, most people forget (or don't care ) to sign out of them first. Make sure if you have Android or iOS, to remove your accounts from the phone or tablet BEFORE a factory reset. Otherwise, the next person won't be able to sign in on the device, and your account can become a target for hackers to bruteforce their way in. (I've recently experienced this, and the loss I'm suffering from it is pretty grand.)

4.) Always backup and sync your important documents, pictures, videos, and other precious moments to multiple cloud accounts, even if it seems redundant. You never know when a device can fail or an account can become compromised.

5.) Don't just use strong passwords, but also change them somewhat often. And don't keep using the same password across multiple things. Make the passwords NOT words or strings of numbers, but a mash-up of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Passwords don't have the same restrictions as usernames, so get creative. No names, no birthdays, nothing easily guessable from a dictionary file. Online random password generators exist, and you can always use something like a password manager like LastPass to remember them for you. Do not write them on sticky notes and place them around your desk... It may be common office work practice, but trust me... Either memorize them, or use a password manager.

6.) Encrypted drives aren't fool-proof, but to the average computer/laptop thief, they won't know how to crack the encryption. They'll typically see it's either "blank" or encrypted and not even try. I also suggest using Biometrics whenever possible, as it's getting harder and harder to fool biometric hardware with paper printouts of your face, for example.

7.) Disable tracking cookies and any other kind of website tracking requests. Using an "incognito" browser that doesn't save anything might not be convenient in the here and now, but you're much better off than if you use a browser that saves all your shit like address for autofill, bank cards, bookmarks, and autologins. You don't want to have somebody crack your account and have the keys to the kingdom for the sake of not inconveniencing yourself.

You can't crack the encryption. Not with all the computing power in the world. Maybe with quantum computers, when those are widely available in say... 200 years, give or take about 180 years.

I use a private tracker, which I have 5 invites to. that, coupled with usenet, since some tv shows were missing episodes, I've never had an issue with. I've downloaded movies from the private tracker too, and I've never gotten an email from my isp. I used to get them several times before usenet.

No, it's just the VPN companies trying to brainwash people with false information. In most cases when people don't even know what they're doing a VPN service does absolutely nothing to improve privacy or security.
Yes I do use a VPN, it is a VPN server at my home that I can use to access other devices on my network when I am away from home. This was the intended use of VPNs, not a falsely advertised "privacy tool" that does almost nothing good in many cases.

It does work for privacy but sometimes its over extracted. That's why I just use a free vpn

If it's a issue, you can setup VPN to run and login on windows startup, so Dad would not need to do anything, but it would be on/ running all the time, which theres no harm in.

It's easy to use...if he can access his email or search the web, then he can figure it out easily.
