I dont think its piracy that gives you that feeling, its based on the amount of games you own. Whether your an adult or not.

I have a perfectly legit 360 with about 125 games and counting, and ALOT of them are picked up for next to nothing and sit on the shelf, some will probably even never get played. Thats the same thing right there. If someone forced me to ditch 95% of my games, id be left with the ones that are special (kinda like what it was like as a child, when youd get maybe 2 or 3 games a year at best). Like someone says above, those games HAD to be special because of how long they had to last.

Also, gaming these days is so over saturated. Various consoles, handhelds, PCS, tablets, phones etc. There is just too much these days to get fully attached to anything. Back in the early 90s youd get maybe half a dozen killer titles on a Megadrive and a SNES per year and that was your lot for gaming.

Also mentioned above and something im guilty of more than anything, is playing a game for a bit, then never touching it again. Id say im a quarter to half way through so many games that ill never finish. And its always because a new one comes along.

I fail to see how steam would inflict the "piracy syndome" You buy steam games and you value them.

I don't know if the "piracy syndrome" discussed by others here is the same I meant. Just imagine the 3DS is hacked and you can get all 3DS games you want in an instant from the internet. To me this would devalue all games because you know you don't have to pay for them anymore to play them.

The only thing that saddens me about games being ripped, distributed and documented, etc is that they contain no secrets anymore.

I remember in the N64 days how I'd spend hours searching areas and such wondering if there were any 2nd level secrets or easter eggs that were waiting to be found. now though you know that none of these things exist or are possible, and you think "well, I could search ingame or I could view it in a hex editor/we.

Actually Steam and its sales have the same effect. On me at least. But that's actually worse because those games cost money.

It appears you play osu!, as do I under the name "Ijah" xD

On the topic of Steam sales. Sometimes I even buy the games which I pirated several months ago but I stopped playing after an hour. Unfortunately, this still didn't help with the, "TOO MANY GAMES" feeling and I move onto the next thing. I know the games are still waiting to be played but since I paid the sale price, I feel no motivation to play them anytime soon.

I have 164 games on steam. I have only played 66 of those. And those aren't pirated games, I have actually bought them.

To top it off, recently I have pirated quite a few PC games and played them through to completion (Tomb Raider a prime example).
Yeah? How many of those did you get just because they were part of Humble Bundle?

That is a valid point, I don't think I've ever realized it until now actually. When flashcards first came out for the DS I immediately got one and became a rom junkie, and I rarely ever bought games so it wasn't really anything special when I got a game, just "Oh this looks good let me try it out" and then drop it after 20 minutes if it doesn't interest me. Now however it's like "Oh I have enough money to buy a new game! Should I get this one or that one?" and then play the game to the full extent of it because you actually bought it. Which is kind of the reason why I don't want the 3DS to be hacked because I know if it does, I'd succumb to buying a flashcart.

However, it is true that if a game is really that good, it'll make you want to keep playing, pirated or not, so pirating kind of does help differentiate between the really good games and the not-so-great games. Like people said, it's mostly just a mental thing.

This sounds like a post I would make.

Honestly, I believe Piracy and pirates should just fuck off and disappear. The 3DS hasn't been hacked and there's no piracy on it other than DS games, but as you listed, look at the quality of games we have. If we had piracy, could you honestly say we'd have the same quality in games?

Absolutely no.

I'm glad the 3DS hasn't been hacked. And I hope it never does, not until the next Nintendo handheld comes out. Yeah yeah, I know, I know

"if u dont want da romz and hacks, y u on dis site?!"

I have stopped pirating everything except software and apps, I play on emulators, but only if I actually own the game. I use flashcards and CFW, but only if I own the game, so I don't have to carry stuff around.

I'm trying to stop, I really am, but I have no money.

I am not seeing that at all ( http://gbatemp.net/threads/essentials-3ds-retail-games.317711/ seems to be a parade of playable but nothing great beyond those a certain crowd enjoys) and for my money the DS library was kicking the crap out of the present 3ds library at this point (some two years in- http://gbatemp.net/threads/5-years-of-ds-roms-in-5-days-year-1.236483/ and http://gbatemp.net/threads/5-years-of-ds-roms-in-5-days-year-2.236648/ and http://www.abgx.net/nds_releases_date.txt for the complete one). Going by the upcoming line up ( http://gbatemp.net/threads/nintendo-3ds-retail-lin-up-2013.345813/ ) I am not expecting great things there either though we do have the big announcement season to come.

Eh, to each their own I suppose. I mean for me, I think the 3DS lineup and library is so much better. I've never bought as many DS games as I have 3DS games.

it's not because a system is hacked and piracy rampant that nobody buy games anymore.
I recently bought few games for wii and PS3 while I could have pirated them.

And I didn't buy 3DS games "which I wouldn't have bought anyway if we couldn't pirate it". (we can think that this "excuse" is false, but I really didn't buy the ones I wouldn't have bought)
It's not because we can't pirate that we buy more, and vice versa.
I have only two games on 3DS, I never bought the other games only based on the fact that they couldn't be pirated.

Some people still buy games they like and they would have bought it piracy or not, while other people are only pirating all they can and probably only because they can do it, not for the game interest.
The people seeking only piracy and collection may be the one who are (or seem) hurt.
And maybe not because they "lost" interest in playing the game they pirate, but because they never had interest to start with.
Proportionally, they may have more games that they don't play than the users selecting only the games they really want. You can call that the piracy syndrome too.

Don't know, i think games nowadays are more focused on entertainment than actual fun. when i was a kid, games had challenges, some really hard, some really crappy. today, AAA games are more like "GOW style, COD style, NFS style, PES style"
And you play a game for it's story, not the actual gameplay.

Games ARE and have always been entertainment. (except the professional simulators and stuff) Sure, there's the artsy story games (which I really like), but most games are still about having fun. The ones you listed (NFS, GOW, COD, PES/FIFA) are certainly not about the story anyway.

Back in the day though, the games were hard mainly because of limitations of a console, or controller or something, or developers actually making a hard game. But if you talk in terms of games not being about fun anymore, then I recommend you try anything by Nintendo.

Great thread.
I can relate to this as I used to pirate literally everything that was piratable! The problems that came with this is games become more throwaway, I had to get every single game for every system (except sports and sims) and this lead to me only finishing the very best games that grabbed my attention. Being as a new game would leak pretty much every day it was hard to stay focused on just one game at a time.
I don't think 3DS has saved anything it's just you can't play ROMs so you invest more time and research into a game before making a purchase and then as you have paid for it you want to get your moneys worth by finishing the game.
I now pay for all my games on 360, Vita and 3DS and I also now finish 99% of them and then go on to get as many trophies and achievements as I think I can get.
When I used to pirate 360 I would skip cutscenes on story orientated single player games just to try and finish the game that bit quicker to get on to the next game. We used to joke about it calling it 'pirates ADD', constantly switching games just because they were so easily available. Since I've been legit I enjoy games way more like I used to and am very careful on deciding what games to invest my time and money into.

I think there might be another step to this that some of you are already on. One past piracy syndrome. If you pirate games, you tend to get bogged down thanks to having tons of games you didnt pay for and you dont really feel like you have an obiligation to play them, because you didnt spend the money.

But theres another part. I think that some of you, including me, just like to have games. Then you keep wanting to buy more games, and you favorite store is the used game hole in the wall. You keep buying games, stockpiling them... but you never play them. It almost becomes a hoarding. I dont know what its called but its bad lol

For me it's always about the games, not how I got them. I buy more games than I pirate, it does not change my attachment rate or anything like that. I've bought games for retail price which I've barely played and I've pirated games or got games for <£5 which I have put hundreds of hours into. It's exactly like people who sit on the internet complaining they are bored when there is so much to do on it, choose a pursuit and stick to it. Anyone blaming piracy for not playing games is making excuses for having no attention span or self control.

Well, from what I've heard from my parents, he had a seizure last night, perhaps an epileptic episode, fucking died, had a near death experience, my dad called the paramedics, they showed up, took him to the hospital, and he woke up covered in tubes, and started complaining.
