I'm new to the WII game. I've went ahead and soft modded my WII and ordered a USB Loader compatible 1TB external drive. I've got USB Loader GX installed to my SD card.

My understanding is that the external drive can not only hold my WII games, but also hold emulator roms and my homebrew apps (although I've read it loads slower).

My question is, how should I partition the drive to support all three features? Also, how big would you recommend each partition? What order should the partitions be? Would it be something like...

Partition 1 - Primary - WBFS - Size ??? (Games)
Partition 2 - Primary - FAT32 - Size ??? (Homebrew)
Partition 3 - Primary - FAT32 - Size ??? (Emulator Roms)

Thanks for the help!

Well can't you just keep all fat32. You can have games on it now..
Yes with Configurable USB Loader. No with USB Loader GX.

Tstein: The Readmii for USB Loader GX says the following:

Required
The partitions have to be formatted to FAT. Mark the partition you want to use for WBFS as Active.
If you make multiple partitions, the First partition must be the one for image,... and the second one for WBFS (for Wii games)

Thanks for the post. However, I'm having trouble understanding what is said here:

Optional

The USB loader can load images and other info of the same usb device as where the games are stored on. To be able to use this function, you will need to make two partitions on the USB device. The partition for the images should have enough with 2GB. You can also make more partitions for other purposes. Use GOOGLE to find out how to make partitions. (Or go here: http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=179085).

What images are they talking about?!? By images do they mean your general stuff like homebrew and roms? Are they saying to make the first partition FAT32 and the second partition a WBFS (active)?

Images as in pictures for the dvd covers and discs that it gets with it's "Cover Download" feature.

Make your first partition FAT32 (whatever size you want or think you'll need) and the second partition WBFS.

@AncientBoi, Yeah, believe you can do PSP games as well. But a Pi5 is much powerful in comparison.

Not sure about other models of Pi4 but the Pi 4 B with 8GBs OCed to 2Ghz handles PSP really great except like 1 game I found and it is playable it just looks bad lol Motor Storm Arctic something or other.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Other games I can have turned up to like 2X and all kinds of enhancements, Motorstorm hmmm nope 1X and no enhancements lol

I mean since basically all the games are errmmm free lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I mean yeah sure but the specs are the same as a $50 model, it's just those pesky "quality of life" things driving up the price, like an actually working speaker, or buttons that don't melt, and stuff like that.

I think all in my Pi 4 was well north of 200 bucks 150ish for the Pi 4 the case the fancy cooler, then like 70 for the 500GB MicroSD then like 70 for the Xbox controller. But honestly it's a nice set up I really enjoy and to me was worth every penny. (even bought more controllers for 2 or 4 player games.) hmmm have never played any 2 player games yet :(
  • Veho @ Veho:
Yeah that's what I hate about the RPi, it's supposedly $30 or something but it takes an additional $200 of accessories to actually turn it into a working something.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
yes that's the expensive part lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I mean sure it's flexible and stuff but so is uremum but it's fiddly.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Yeah a lot of it I consider a hobby, using Batocera I am constantly adjusting the collection adding and removing stuff, scraping the artwork. Haven't even started on some music for the theme... Also way down the road I am considering attempting to do a WiiFlow knock off lol

I want everything served on a plate plz ktnx, "work" is too much work for me.
  • Veho @ Veho:
Hmm, with that in mind, maybe a complete out-the-box solution with all the games collected, pacthed and optimized for me would be worth $150
