I have noticed that NSZ files are in the wild. And boy those file sizes are ridiculously small!
Is anyone thinking about re-downloading the newly formatted NSZs to replace their existing NSPs to save space on your hard drive? I am thinking about doing that but it will take some time to go through all the current NSPs to replace. Any thoughts??

P.S. I like to archive just in case you know.

Why would you keep the nsp's around after you install them? Just in case?

Legit question. I'm not an nsp user. I have sx os on all my switches so I use xci's.

Personally, I like to archive everything, so... I do keep every NSP I get.

So, this NSZ format is like a Rip...? it decreases the quality of the game...?

I haven't exploited my switch as of yet, but I do own one unpatched. I've been archiving every game I own, because I've lost data in the past and I don't want that to happen again.

yes, there's nsc builder to compress your own nsp. I did that, and it took two or three days to compress a couple hundred nsp files to nsz.

afaik, games take up the same amount of space, because they're decompressed during installation, so the quality should be the same. that's as far as I know by only reading and not testing.

depending on where you got the nsp, some things may not compress properly. I've only seen dlc like this. I redownloaded a few of those nsps, and they compressed, so it was the download (off by a kilobyte or so), but some of the bad nsp files are just copied and pasted on various sites. those may not compress, but we're talking about small nsps only (120KBs). those could be unlockers, which I've read are not compatible with compression.

I definitely will. My private tracker has several collections which total every switch game in NSP format. Ill need to either convert myself or or wait until someone inevitably posts a NSZ switch collection. I think a cool end goal for me would be to have every switch game in NSZ format on a google drive acount for web installs via tinfoil.

NSZ is the same as NSP only smaller
NSP's contain NCA's whereas NSZ's contain NCZ's
NCZ's are compressed NCA's
so yeah they're basically the exact same shit just smaller.

When you install that format, the game weight less? or is the same 14gb installing if youre installing a 7gb Zelda BOTW NSZ?

that's also something I've wondered. decompressing nsz, which I did to check integrity, is much faster than compressing them, but it's still pretty slow.

When you actually install the game it will be the same size as if you just installed the nsp.
the benefits of NSZ are that it's easier to download and store since the file size is smaller and it will install quicker.

Welp. I was looking for something akin to cso files or something that "stays" compressed upon installation. This makes it literally worthless to me.

nuked all my nsps in favour of nsz
no point in keeping them now
also much quicker to d/l than compress them myself
just waiting for xcz to be supported

This is a noob question but, is there a negative side for installing NSZ? Does the installation takes longer?

Usually the repack of pirated pc games tends to be smaller because it removes all the files you don't need but it takes a long time to install.
The other day I install a 2gb PC game and the repack took 45-50min to install.
