Hacking Noob questions from new Wii U owner

Hi thanks for any help. Just ordered a Mario 3D Land Wii U bundle which I expect to get next week. I also picked up Splatoon which from what I gather I need to update the Wii U to v5.3.2. Was wondering if I should pick up Smash now while its on sale or can I get by without it? I rather not pick it up if possible since I already spent a good amount this month.

Also I know this is probably a dumb question, but would this same Wii U gamepad I will be using on this hacked Wii U also work with a different Wii U with the latest firmware? Was also considering getting a cheap used Wii U console without the gamepad in the future for just online play. Since those seem to go for pretty cheap without the gamepad.

gamepads are controllers you would just sinc it to the new wiiu, the only diference between a gamepad and a normal controller is only one gamepad can be active at a time.
