Hello. I just got a console that has the blue screen of death.

I read in a previous post that someone got it working by heating the for about 2 minutes with a heat gun.

First question, I was wondering what chip I need to heat up. It is the NVidia Chip that is circled in yellow on the second photo? Are there any other chips I need to heat up?

Second question, do I just heat it up and not touch the chip, or do I wiggle the heated up chip?

Thanks!

Is it not still within warranty?

Anyway I don't know whether this is a GPU or CPU issue and we have not seen enough lites falter (I honestly thought given the heating situation with the original there would have been loads more there but hey less failure is not a bad thing) to know what goes.

Generally a reflow is a really temporary fix (as in boot to get whatever saves, images and the like you want from it, anything more is a bonus). This also supposes it is a loose joint or a whisker that is causing this. If it is an actually fried chip or something fun with bond wires then it might be even more temporary than that, though ignoring the warranty thing then I guess it can't get more broken.

Don't give it a wiggle, indeed for some reflows on other devices you would be advised to put something between the chip and PCB to stop it from squashing down under its own weight and air pressure and with it maybe shorting a ball or two. You might also want to figure out how to support the board so it does not flex at the wrong point (if it is sagging underneath or raised up then when it goes back inside the case the forces might pop the chip off or make things worse). The idea of a reflow is you get whatever dodgy joints are there to be molten again and then freeze and hopefully get a good joint out of it. The better thing would be a reball (again assuming it is the connections and not a dud chip or a bond wire issue)

Some will also advise you cut a hole in a piece of foil to give you access to the relevant chips but protect everything around it. Given how many little passives are around that is not a bad plan.

Add flux and 450 degree, low air flow for maybe 2 to 3 min. See if it helps, might have to reflow the ram too

Get some no clean flux since it's hard to clean between the cage. Apply to all side and try to blow it under the chip

You probably aren’t going to fix it permanently if you have to reflow the GPU or CPU.

If you are planning on selling it, then just know that you are selling something that will die again in like 2 weeks and people will not be happy with you.

I guess it's a chance thing and depend on the damage. A possible solution is use it for "2 week" then sell it hopefully people will be more happy that way.

Joke aside, you need a stencil to reball it.

I usually press down firmly on different locations of the chip while attempting to start the device. If you find the location of the broken solder the system will sometimes start. Then you know where to focus your heat. I've also had significantly more RAM chips need reflow than processors. The processor may be more problematic but it has not been the case with the ones I've seen
