Nintendo says it currently has no plans to release any other Switch revisions beyond the OLED model

oled_model_photo_01.0.jpg

With Bloomberg having spent years reporting on the existence of an upgraded Nintendo Switch unit, and for all those rumors to culminate in the Nintendo Switch OLED model, some fans have been disappointed with all Nintendo has to offer. Beyond that, others believe that the fabled "Switch Pro" still exists, but has been delayed due to a shortage of materials, with some outlets still speculating that the information leak of "4K output" for a new Switch variant means there will be an inevitable Switch Pro somewhere down the line. Nintendo themselves have stepped in to right the rumors and say, definitively, that they have "no plans for launching any other model [of the Nintendo Switch] at this time".

Yes, I know we can overclock the Switch with homebrew and I've seen that video before. But it doesn't show that much of an increase in performance except if you're playing games in portable mode. I'm guessing that's where you're getting the whole "50% power boost" from:
6cf7d83655.jpg

For playing in docked mode, it doesn't improve all too much at max clocks. I still stand by that even if you increase clocks, it won't be a big jump to be a "Switch Pro".

Games like legend of zelda age of calamity, legend of zelda link's awakening, outer worlds issue is memory bandwidth and overclocking the memory help slightly but won't fix it without new hardware

Third party developers want better hardware, so it's easier to port a game to the switch, why? So it doesn't cost as much and take less time to develop them to work with the switch

So Overclock is a bandaid which Nintendo could allow a performance mode or power saver mode on the current switch, so people could choose what they want.

This could be interpreted as them possibly having something in the works, but not planning on releasing it at this time. Maybe in 2 years when the Switch is near the end of its life span.

yeah but this is not news. I believe increasing the memory bandwidth is a limitation in the Tegra X1 chip. Nvidia could probably make Nintendo a custom Tegra X1 chip with better memory bandwidth though. However if they wanted to do that then I think they would have put that chip in the OLED Switch.

it just doesn’t seem realistic that they would release a new model within a year from the OLED model (who is gone buy the OLED model then?) or 1 year or so before their next gen hardware (who is going to buy the improved Switch when Switch 2 or whatever it will be is just around the corner?)

So even thought they could do it, I don’t think they will.

also we don’t know what Nintendo has in store for us when it comes to their Nextgen hardware.
It could be a Switch 2, a classic console and classic handheld separate, some Portable VR headset or something completely different for all we know.

Problem is the current switch limitations are at the point third parties may/will start to stop making ports to the switch, at least with their current games.
Now you maybe right in making a non-hybrid console so they can have two lines of products again and a next gen switch would happen 2-3 years later

and we don’t know what Nintendo has in store for us

Yes it's a bummer that the Switch is starting to become a pain to port new games onto. But that has basically always been the situation for Nintendo..
at least since they started making games multi-platform.

I don't think that is a huge problem though. There is still going to be plenty of games coming to the system.
And the Switch already have a pretty nice Library. So Nintendo will probably keep selling loads of games regardless.

We just have to wait 2-3 years for their next console.

I'm not worry about 1st 2nd party games, it's 3rd party games that may stop, and a console needs all 3 to successful. The thing that made the switch a success is the third party games people love to be able to play them on the go and if that would stop. The sales would slow down too.

I hope a Classic Library sub is coming if they are going to shut down the Wii u store

Well I'm not too worried about the 3rd party titles. sure the most demanding titles might not make it.
But I still think there will be plenty. And there is already so many titles. I have a huge backlog of titles that I havn't got around to buy yet. So even if the 3rd party titles slow down a little bit I bet it won't make a huge impact.

I wouldn't be so sure. Imagine the OLED Switch has a display at Best Buy right next to a display for Steam Deck. For $50 more, you get more than 3x the power and a WAY bigger game library with all the newest AAA games, and you don't have to wait for half-assed ports. Switch is still gonna be attractive to the younger crowd, but most grown adults would reach for the Steam Deck without question.
steam deck is a joke
that thing is going to fail HARD
how many times have these things been tried?
they always end in tears
you can already tell by their "2-8 hours" spec in the battery life department this is going to be a disaster

If this thing goes for 75 minutes an AAA title I will literally shit a brick

realistically it is just not practical unless you are like me, have bad eye sight and just use a portable because you don't want to strain to look at a TV even if it is 50" and 5 feet away , and never take you portables out of the house anyways so are always on or have access to AC.

otherwise battery will suck I predict 45min on AAA titles if you get really lucky and dial down the frame rate and use min brightness unless they decide to stream everything but then you are looking at other problems with getting a stable connection on the go

At this price point and with this much value? Exactly zero times.

Nonsense, 2 hours trying to run newer AAA titles at 60 FPS is more than reasonable. They lay out all the specs for you: the APU is a 15 watt max draw and IIRC 5 watt or less minimum, with a 40wHr battery. So yeah indies easily gonna last 8 hours.

Portal 2 max settings at 60 FPS ran for 4 hours, max settings at 30 FPS ran for 6 hours.

you may be right but I will remain skeptical till they out in the wild en masse

who is even building this thing anyways ? what kind of hardware development track record do they have?

Valve is partnered with AMD and some manufacturer (probably based in China). Pretty sure they've built all the recent Valve hardware (Index and controllers), so they'd have experience with displays/screens and various controller layouts. Not that the latter is too important, as the design is entirely Valve's, and they've upgraded stuff like the touch pads in a number of ways relative to the old Steam controllers. They've also said they're doing everything possible to ensure joysticks don't ever drift, which is nice to hear.

Nintendo and steam are not the first handheld pc, there even a more powerful handheld than the steam deck; default 2 hrs will be the tops for heavy AAA games. Unless being on Linux system might get more battery life and with some TCP tweaking you could get more than stock config

My reply to pedio702 was that overclocking the OG Switch does not equal to it becoming on the level of a potential/hypothetical "Switch Pro".

I know that OC'ing helps with performance, but only slightly, especially in docked mode.
