...all these people that say "a console doesn't need soul, it just needs to play games"?

Like, yeah, you could argue this for the HOME menu, settings and like, but things like music or an overall snappier interface should be the standard for an online games store on a console.

I am a lot more inclined to browse the 3DS eShop for games (even though it's closed now) than the Switch eShop - just because of a calm music theme that plays and makes browsing feel much less like a chore.

With the future moving mostly to digital and from cartridges/discs, this is especially more needed, given that people will spend much more time over there trying to pick a game.

Meanwhile the Switch eShop is a sad husk of a "store" putting you away from game discovery and towards just inputting a game name found through other means -- and this isn't a sentiment that only I have.

the switch eshop is a masterclass case in point of lousy UX, including design AND execution (feels likes it's running on a raspberry pi server). The switch's homescreen UI is also lousy. 70% of the screen is useless, they couldn't even be bothered to at least implement a wallpaper system or a per-game-background (like on the PSP UI). It feels like it was designed by an accounting department rather than by a creative (let alone game-loving) team.

The Switch UX is just a master class in lazy. Everything about it is… safe… From the home menu to the eShop. It’s reminiscent of a UX beta I took part in well over 15 years ago.

I feel exactly the same way about it, stripping it down more would mean just having a command line to launch games.

That homebrewed menu looks quite nice, can you add music to it?

You know whats more irritating? Hearing the same thing over and over again, where NOTHING will be changed unless bugged to the console makers.

People like me that grew up with a NES and SNES didn't really mind not having dopamine needing things all the time to start playing our games.

This, home menus are just another step in between playing games.. don't see the point of sitting there looking at it

a working digital shop is not a "dopamine" thing it's a necessary part of a modern console

you have to make sure its good

The 3DS and Wii U both have superior interfaces. It's likely that Nintendo chooses not to improve the Switch's interface because it has the risk of introducing security vulnerabilities. It's also possible that Nintendo is waiting for the Switch 2 to introduce a better interface so it looks like a more complete upgrade over the original.

Switch could have the same UI than new 3Ds and will be a total hit.

I miss throwing a cartridge in the N64 and booting the game up immediately

I think the GameCube system was best, games automatically launch unless you hold a button

The menus kill it for me

Hahaha, my old soul loves this idea.

We do have that fancy logo button on controllers, so the bios is always a button press away. Console makers will never allow booting straight into a game because they have to sell digital content. You have to walk by all the movie posters to enter the theater, so to speak.

LOAD "'*",8,1

Miss the old commodore days (and the load errors after several minutes of cassette loading time)

You have to be able to play your digital content.

I think the 3DS mastered modern charm.

Given that I have a hacked Switch which only has digital games on it, I'd prefer my Switch to boot to the main menu rather than directly into a game. An option to make the Switch boot directly to whatever physical game is inserted would be nice for those who want it.

On the one hand, the PS1 bios/boot screens gave the console some 'character', for the lack of a better phrase.

On the other hand:

3DS was really the sweet spot for me. Simple, charming, clean, and concise. A natural evolution from the UI and formatting of the DSi. Many of the system themes were charming and creative--not to mention the themes I could get from homebrew software. I loved downloading themes based on old Disney movies I used to watch, or non-Nintendo games I grew up with. It was smart, without being too complicated or safe.
I haven't really liked anything past that. Modern Xbox and PlayStation UIs are much too busy and littered with advertisements, and the Switch UI is as devoid of life and personality as an interface can get.

There was a charm in pre-menu systems as well. The feeling of clicking a cartridge down in my NES, closing the flap, pressing the button in and watching the static wash away to wonderful chiptune music... those were the days!
