This has been a great help to getting my nephew's n3ds working again. He's had problems with the camera pretty much since I hacked it. The system still worked up till a couple weeks ago when he said it bricked. Can't believe it was all due to the camera.

Thank you for your help. I already ordered a new camera so i have to wait now.
It now works flawlessly (except for the touchscreen and for now the camera). The screen flickering stops after 1-2 minutes so it's not a problem.

Just a last question. I also seen that pressing around the bottom screen will make pressure to the screen (part of the LCD turning white). I would like to know if it's only for me or if it's the same for everyone.

@Msama
Did replacing the camera work or was it in vain?

@gisel213 I made an account just so I can thank you!

I got a N3DS XL that I haven't used it in a while. It was out of battery so i decided to charge it for a couple of hours. After awhile I picked it up i noticed that the back plate is bulging a bit so i decided to investigate. It turns out the battery was bloated (nani?!). I quickly removed it and ordered a replacement battery from Amazon. The battery arrived after a couple of days and I installed it, but alas, BSOD.

After searching for hours for a fix, i found this post. I opened the back and disconnected the camera ribbon cable and turned the 3DS on. It worked!! I turned the system off again and re-attached the camera cable and it booted! everything works again. Thanks!

Hey gisel213 here i aint posted in a awhile... Theres nothing wrong with your mods. I had a New 3ds xl that had the same problem black screens sound but could see recovery menu...
The answer is this bad camera open the console just remove the camera ribbon... You will have no camera but it will work otherwise... Cheers and good luck and leave that camera ribbon cable unplgged when you put it back together.

This DID fix mine as well. Thanks gisel213 (and TurdPooCharger).

I'm also adding that this:

It worked!!! I turned the system off again and re-attached the camera cable and it booted! everything works again. Thanks!

Did NOT work for me, but that is to be expected. That's because some people, like Benimaru, might just have a dirty/bad connection, which unplugging it and plugging it back in fixes. Most of us though, with bad cables, would not be so lucky that just a re-plug in would fix it.

I also want to shamelessly add that I predicted this fix back at the start of my thread. Since we knew this was only happening to "new" styles, I guessed that it had to be related to one of the new features. I picked the wrong one of the main two (brightness sensor instead of new camera assembly) though...

Are most examples of this brick on New style systems? If so, here is a theory:

Maybe the auto-brightness feature they implemented on New styles is causing a problem somehow. And since recovery mode was very likely never updated with that feature, the screen & input in recovery mode works fine...

In other words, a hardware problem with the auto-brightness sensor & light level changing might be causing this. Which would explain why this brick is not recoverable through any software means.

I had the same issue. Bought a new 3ds xl that wouldn’t turn on. Both screens black but can hear music in the background and bottling into safe mode turned the screens on. Couldn’t figure it out for days. Swapped motherboards to check and see if motherboards in a different working 3ds and they were fine. So I tried disconnecting the camera ribbon cable and the system turned on. My guess it had something to do with the sensor on the camera that wouldn’t turn the screen on.

I had the same issue. Bought a n3dsxl from eBay that had both screens black but played sound in the background. Screen would only work when doing the L+R+up+A. I even swapped motherboards into working 3ds and they were fine. I fixed the issue by unplugging the camera ribbon cable and the system turned on. My guess the sensor that is on the camera went bad and won’t turn the screens on when booting.

I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.

  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
