Does anyone know of any 'local shops' that sell those little round strong magnets (the ones like a cm in diameter, and are REALLY strong)

and maybe a disc of magnetic metal and is aluminum magnetic?

neodymium magnets are what you want, your best bet is a tool shop (magnetic pickup tools and some sailing supplies), gadget shop or science kit. Disc, I suggest a steel washer and make a coil around it, pass a DC voltage over the coil and bam an electromagnet (be sensible and do not chew on the live ends and all that).
The washer (assuming you are not using AC) will become magnetic as well: search for hysteresis loop (remanance is what you will end up with):

Aluminium is not magnetic (like most iron, cobalt and nickel alloys that is), it makes for a reasonable electromagnet though.

sometimes if you get lucky you can find some decent magnets in the back of radio shacks or find a hobby store.

Also my friend got some decent magnets from steve spangler science. Forgot if we can hotlink to store or not, but a search on google will pull it up.

He wants us to be 'creative' but i guess an electromagnet is creative

And thnx, i was talking about neodymium magnets.

Our project (group) is still in the planning phase, and if you can't tell, we're procrastinators, so we don't really know what we're gonna do yet :'(
