Seems (at least with Original R4 set) that it doesn't produce valid DSi Extended headers so makerom/make_cia refuse to make CIAs (and the generated folder did not contain CIAs. Just the SRL files)

So something seems broken with the Original R4 setting.

It's not broken. Put the Forwarder3DS folder in the hard drive root, and run the .jar file.

They are just stored on the SD card as backup and essentially unusable until copied back to the NAND. Same applies to the DSi.

And yes.
Yeah, I don't want to have them unusable so I just cut it back to a handful of games I really wanted launchers/banners for. I'll try doing the bit with the rom tomorrow and see how it goes.

If using the Windows version, there's no need for Java.

I'll read documentation about make_cia, to see if there's something I can do with bad responses from it when executing from Java.

Edit:

Little off-topic. Since Java 8, most security breaches have been fixed. And, since most recent browsers already blocked any type of Java execution directly, there are so little things to worry about. Just as EXE files, only open JARs from trusted sources.

So I tried using makerom to make the cia, and this is what I got:

makerom -srl "file.nds"
[CIA WARNING] Common Key could not be loaded, CIA will not be encrypted (Ignore that part)
[CIA ERROR] Invalid TWL SRL File
[RESULT] Failed to build CIA

Yeah DSI Extended header is incomplete/corrupt. I looked at the SRLs it generated. I manually repaired them. Then built CIAs and tried them. Don't seem to work. White screens. Then bottom screen goes black. Nothing happens after that. :(

It does show the "Failed to start YSMenu.nds" message on bottom screen if I boot it without the card inserted.

Try using make_cia in Command Promt instead, and leave the DSi Extended header incomplete/corrupt. That usually works.
