Gaming Mystery Wii Mod Chip

I just got a Wii with a modchip in it. BUT the person does not know which type of modchip is in it.

Is there a way to find out which chip is inside without opening up the case?

I might need to update the chip's firmware, etc, so I guess I need to know which chip it is.

AFAIK there isn't a way to know without opening up the Wii and looking....

...then hope that it's a 'recognised' one because my first chip was some clone that took me an age to track down as to what it really was.
