After Detective Pikachu, Sonic The Hedgehog and Saints Row, it's Mortal Kombat's turn for a live-action movie adaptation. James Wan, who directed Furious 7 and more recently Aquaman, will be handling production while Simon McQuoid will be making his directing debut with this title. Shooting will begin later this year in Adelaide, Australia which will be the "largest film production in South Australia's history", according to South Australia Premier Steven Marshall.

“I’m really happy and excited to be bringing another show back to Australia with Mortal Kombat, especially after having such a great experience filming Aquaman,” added James Wan in a statement. “Now we get to experience South Australia with its scenic locations and a wealth of artistic talent to work with. It will be perfectly suited for this fantasy-action project.”

This is not the first time that MK will be adapted to the big screen. The 90s actually saw two adaptations but which were not so well received. Do you think this reboot will mend the wounds?

I hope they make the Genesis version with blood, not the family friendly SNES version.

I mean, hey, even bad game movie adaptations are still a step-up from DC movies these days...

This one needs to be rated R if only to differentiate from the first movie. Give us some actual fatalities. Also need some x-ray shots to get it up to date.

If they are not planning on doing any gore or spine ripping, then they can just cancel this project.

Would be awesome if they try to bring back the original cast like robin, cary, talisa, and bridgette. They don't need to be the main stars but a cameo would be cool.

I remember watching the first Mortal Kombat movie in a theatre back in the arcade MK craze era. It wasn't that bad, actually. Goofy, maybe, but still ok. I never saw the sequel. I also saw the Mario Bros movie back then in a theatre, but let's just leave it at that. :P

    .

The first Mortal Kombat movie was okay and has it fans, we just prefer to think the second one doesn't exist.

Isn't the first MK movie considered one of the best vg-to-movie adaptations of all time? I mean, it's so beloved by both series fans and Netherrealm folks that some of stuff from it was even carried to the newer games, both canon-wise and in small references.

The Mortal Kombat Movie was the best ever VideoGame Adaption ever as well as being one of the best Movies.

    Unfortunately the sequel was P***.

Mortal Kombat Conquest was awesome though a second season would have great.

when i was a kid i saw an old Mortal Kombat movie which starred the same actor who portrayed BRUCE LEE in Legend of Bruce Lee the movie (JUST CAN REMEMBER yet)

It was RED BANDED for +18, but i praised it so much and watched so many times!

I have faith in this director :P

Edit: NVM i found it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mortal_Kombat_(film), the 1st one was well received, @Prans it grossed 122M against 18M budget :P

The Aquaman director has quite big pants to film if he wants to make something better that the first Mortal Kombat movie.

    EARTH
The movie is being directed by Simon McQuoid, Play Station commercials and the screenplay is by "lifelong gamer" Greg Russo

the reboot will focus on a brand new character named Cole turner. Cole is described as "a Philadelphia boxer that is recruited by a prophecy chaser to compete in a fantastical tournament - the outcome of which determines the fate of Earth and its inhabitants". Established Mortal Kombat characters, such as Kano, Sonya Blade and Raiden, are set to appear.

If they can get the CG budget the movie should look great
