Microsoft backtracks on Xbox Live Gold pricing increase following outcry

xbox.jpg

Yesterday, Microsoft announced an increase in its Xbox Live Gold subscription services with 1-month memberships increasing by $1 to $10.99 a month, while 3-month and 6-month subscriptions saw a $5 and $20 increase, respectively. However, this was not received well by the community and today, the company decided to reverse its decision, stating that they "messed up". Microsoft updated its announcement, stating that there is no changes to Xbox Live Gold pricing.

This means that Xbox Live Gold subscription is back to $9.99 for 1-month, $24.99 for 3-months, $39.99 for 6-months and $59.99 for retail 12-months. The company also mentions that free-to-play games, "will no longer need an Xbox Live Gold membership to play those games on Xbox" and that they "are working hard to deliver this change as soon as possible in the coming months".

You can read Microsoft's statement below as excerpted from a blog post update:

We messed up today and you were right to let us know. Connecting and playing with friends is a vital part of gaming and we failed to meet the expectations of players who count on it every day. As a result, we have decided not to change Xbox Live Gold pricing.

We’re turning this moment into an opportunity to bring Xbox Live more in line with how we see the player at the center of their experience. For free-to-play games, you will no longer need an Xbox Live Gold membership to play those games on Xbox. We are working hard to deliver this change as soon as possible in the coming months.

If you are an Xbox Live Gold member already, you stay at your current price for renewal. New and existing members can continue to enjoy Xbox Live Gold for the same prices they pay today. In the US, $9.99 for 1-month, $24.99 for 3-months, $39.99 for 6-months and $59.99 for retail 12-months.

Thank you.

ALL of this screams SONY FANBOY..

I will give you one thing tho... i wasn't talking about numbers of systems sold. But if that's the case then the 360 didn't win that gen, neither did the PS3.... The fucking Wii did by absolute miles!!
Yeah nintendo always wins :yaywii::yay3ds::switch: only real flop was the wii u.

By sales yes, but by functionality and enjoyability? Nah, the Wii was the bottom of the barrel, with the Wii U being leaps and bounds ahead - screw dysfunctional motion controls. Screw underutilising the Classic Controller.

Also, your sig: it's ASCII, not "asci". Just noticed that gaff.

Reminds me of Xbox One launch.

Microsoft: We will make you connect online to play your offline games
Fans: no you won't
Microsoft: You're right

They do do this, you can't setup the console without creating a online profile or signing into one, at least now anyway, that's just for the initial setup.

I remember buying a banned console that had been factory reset and it was basically a brick.

The original plan was you had to connect to the internet at least once every 24 hours or you couldn't play offline games.

Can we get the ball rolling on this for Netflix? They raise the price like 6 times a fucking year at this point. Microsoft tries to raise the price after two decades and people freak the fuck out like $1 will make or break their entire life.

it's only suspicious because the other companies are so incredibly toxic and anti consumer, that when someone actually does something pro consumer everyone thinks they're up to some sort of scheme
Maybe this was part of the scheme. Pretend to raise the prices of the services. When faced with the inevitable backlash, come out with a rapid response along the lines of "Wait, that was a terrible decision, here's a better alternative!"...

Just seems too easy, don't you think?

microsoft aren't EA, they don't seem too interested in taking 2 steps forward and 1 step pack

Different target audiences. the general community would be more accepting of price increases of subscriptions they utilize heavily (and often, share)

Exacty. EA would never do something like this. If it were EA? It'd have taken a minimum of 72 hours for them to even mention the screw up. Then another week to "fix" it.

The "fix" would be decreasing the price increase to 1.1x or 1.2x instead of double - so it'd still be a higher price, but not as high.

because they seem most likely to do it, considering their "unification of platforms" thing and their constant track record of trying to be the most consumer friendly since their fuckup in 2013
Why would they do something that would make them lose money
