I'm curious why nobody with a hardware nand mod has dumped the nand before and after the nag, and done a file comparison yet to see where this fucker downloads to, so we can pinpoint the exact file and delete it with a file manager.
I did, see screenshot a few posts above -- most files get installed with different names (like google play updates -- com.package-1.apk is ultimately replaced with com.package-2.apk) but they're not a linear sequence, CTX files appear, and worse some files are deleted for new ones...

I'll post directory diffs in 11 hours from now if everything goes fine

With the new update I am sure I am not the only one who screwed up and left emunand connected to the net in sleep mode.

Blowing up emunand by formatting it or restring from a backup with emunand tool will do it but will also require reinstalling all the cia files and either loosing the saves or extracting them with SDF.

Is there a better way?

i'm using this so i never get nagged : http://gbatemp.net/threads/release-psvproxy-net-proxy-dns-blocker-3ds-update.377880/#post-5292505

Jayro cearp there it is!

"+" are files added and "-" removed from NAND main partition after getting nag, comparing 8.1-19E to 9.6-whateverwasoutyesterdayE

I am confident they will be able to whip us up a little tool to take care of this before GW releases their update Soon™

2 questions. Does this require you to leave your PC running all the time? Does it block for WII U as well?

All these kinds of solutions are great until you leave your house and have to dodge all the Nintendo Zones. :) Last weekend all three of my consoles connected up to the free ATT Wifi at the Embassy Suites we stayed at. Bastards!

yes indeed you have to leave the computer open, and i dunno for wiiu but should be the same

I tried twice but didn't work in emunand for me.

I wonder where the file actually resides. If it is in the folder structure it could be deleted but if it is in the emunand "partition" not so easy. :)

if we had a 3ds nand system file browser already we would be over this.
i wish we had a 3ds NAND system file browser, i would love to get my hands on the 3ds file system.
we could simply browse and delete that update file.

This is NOT guaranteed. Nintendo changed encryption again so it re-hashes everytime the console boots. Not easily worked around since it directly affects emuNAND.

Thor, I would recommend restoring your emuNAND partition to a backup and then blocking Nity update servers in your router.
Only on new3ds. Only idiots bought one of those expecting to use a gateway without all the hassle.

Actually, I bought one because I didn't have an XL yet and thought it was a great reason to upgrade. Of course there would be more hurdles than the already stable OG3DS, but with better features it made sense for me. GW was a big bonus even if the exploit is a little different from other versions.

I don't find the N3DS to have hassle using the gateway. I actually like not having the wifi turned on in my sysnand on my N3DS, no chance it will get the update nag. OOT only takes a min to get running, and honestly I rarely have to use it because I'm just in sleep mode all the time.

Anyone that is complaining needs to just grow up and be happy with what we have, which is better then not having anything.

No trivial way to remove updates without essentially reimplementing part of recovery mode...

Some files also get permanently replaced (different name and different contents) just by getting the nag!

Sooo.... is there a way to remove the nag, but it's a bit technical? Or is there no way to do it in emuNAND at all?

I would not at all mind decrypting and opening up my emuNAND image if it meant I could get rid of this nag. I got careless and forgot to edit the hosts file on my SpillpassPi <.<

If you had a hardmod, perhaps this be done?

Flash emunand to sysnand. Boot in to safe mode, delete update, and then make new emunand. Might suck if you have to reinstall a lot of CIAs though.

Both...!
You'll have to mount the CTR FAT16 partition, then delete a lot of files spread all over different folders and, worse, obtain some files that were deleted by getting the nag -- they might depend on the exact source→target version pairs or even be console specific!

seems like i got rid of my emunand update nag!
here is what i've done:
i had the 9.6 update nag downloaded by accident leaving my wireless on while in sleep mode.
when the 9.7 update was out i enabled wireless again, closed my n3ds for about 10 secs to enter sleep mode. after ~10 secs i opened it again and disabled wireless.
this was about a week ago and the nag didnt come back...i know its very random and could come back but after a lot of playing and testing i'm really positive its gone.

Interesting. I will give it a try if the dang things haven't downloaded 9.7 yet on me. :)

And for that reason i make an emunand backup every time after i installed new software/games on my 3DS, it's worth the extra few minutes of effort :) when the update nag appears in my emunand, i just can rewrite my emunand from the backup :)

I think i can confirm that my emunand update nag is gone. I played severeal hours today, booted various games and booted up my n3ds about 10 times (gw 3.2.1 rocks!!!) the nag didn't appear a single time. Maybe the 9.7 update "overwrote" the old 9.6 nag without being completely downloaded.
So the emunand nag can be deleted as soon as the next fw is released.

Edit: DjoeN's method is superior if you have an emunand backup of course.

Some time went by now,
is there any new way to remove the Nag? I also had it nagging today, though I can't seem to reproduce it. Didn't appear after a reboot or after closing and opening the device.

I discovered the method to solve and it's very simple for New3DS: enter in eshop (without spoofer or hans) from home menu in emunand, when the nag of update appears, select "update" (don't worry) and appear the recovery menu, now only SELECT CANCEL and the pre-update has been deleted.
