My first play-through came in at just under 30 hours doing all the side quests I could find, and playing on the easiest difficulty. Finished the game with level 48.

Took me about 15-20. I didn't do all the side quests because they got redundant towards the end, but I did a majority of them.
And when you beat the Main Game you can restart with a New Game+. Otherwise you have to use a save before you finish the main story to finish everything up.

Not really.
But there's a point-of-no return:
It's when you land on Ilos. So if you need to finish up side quests, do it before Ilos.
Also, there's a New Game+ where you can start a new game with your previous stats and items. So you have a chance to get to level 50 for the achievement if you couldn't get it the first time.

I don't have a wii u anymore to test it myself, but if homebrews are not visible on the wii u menu I think you can press L + R + minus to open the plugin menu, there should be an option called "homebrews on wii u menu" or something similar
