Say I am in the middle of a game and go to the home menu and open a homebrew app it closes the game i was playing and starts the homebrew and it gets stuck on the nintendo 3ds/homebrew intro.
I am on the latest firmware 11.10-U, and on the latest luma (official, non fork), i also tested my sd card for errors with h2testw, no errors were found

  1. In GodMode9, backup the CIAs of the example homebrew title and game that triggers that stuck Nintendo 3DS logo. Find the smallest sized titles.
  2. Rename the Nintendo 3DS folder to Nintendo 3DS (main). Boot back to HOME Menu to create a blank setup.
  3. Install those two (2) example CIAs. Check if the stuck logo issue exist in this test setup.
What happens?

i recently got a new 3ds and did this, instead now i have a cartridge copy of the game that was suspended, and the homebrew i used, i got a newer version of. i did the same thing. still got a hang, i did do a system transfer from the o3ds to the n3ds.
edit: this also happened on the o3ds but even if i just have the game open for a couple minutes and then i close the game, and then open the homebrew without anything suspended. it still hangs. the hang for both of these isn't a freeze but it just shows the 3ds logo and goes black, i have to reboot to get out

If the game is a digital copy installed on HOME Menu, and it is on this SeedDB list, try seed importing.
  • FBI → Titles → Game → Import Seed (requires Internet connect)
  • For offline seed importing with FBI, use hydroseed [1] to break up seeddb.bin into DAT files.
    • Example instructions on how to use hydroseed [2].

Another consideration is playing out of region games. Are your 3DS systems natively USA, but the games in question EUR or JPN?

If your n3DS is still hanging on the Nintendo 3DS logo despite the above two (2) points,
  1. I don't have to write steps about reformatting and hardware testing the SD card since you already done this. Thank you.
  2. Backup the current SysNAND *.bin image.
  3. Attempt 3DS firmware repair with the combo: CTRTransfer (standard) + System Update [update back to 11.10]

If steps 1-3 doesn't solve the hanging logo bug,

4. Restore the SysNAND using the image from step 2.
5. Attempt 3DS firmware repair again, this time with the combo: CTRTransfer (Type D9) + System Update

the physical game is usa, and my system is usa
Before trying the CTRTransfer + System Update methods, read this thread's case study.
The problem could be your game cartridge is going bad. A way to check for this is to grab a clean CIA copy of that exact game [same TitleID] sourced from the Internet. In other words, you get the game from those sites / not ripped from your cart.

Before ruling out bad dump, is the digital version of the game that's currently installed on HOME Menu... ?
  • (1) downloaded from Nintendo eShop
  • (2) external CIA acquired from that ISO site

Another possible culprit,
  • Turn on the n3DS and hold the (SELECT) button to access Luma3DS v9.1 configuration.
  • Do not tick mark or use the last option: ( ) Disable ARM11 exception handlers

Are you by any chance using game mods like BootNTR CFW? (Not to be confused with ntrboot DS flashcart hacking)

the dump was from that iso site, but since i have the cartridge i dont have it anymore. the arm11 option is not ticked either. would the new 3ds cpu ticked at Clock+L2 be the reason why? i didnt have that option on o3ds so i don't see why.

Backup that game's save + extdata in Checkpoint / JKSM.
Redownload that exact game's *.cia from that ISO site and install it on the n3DS.
Keep in mind that reinstalling a game will delete the previous save that was place (thus use of a save manager).

Don't dump the rom from your cart and convert it into *.cia. Even if your game cart is brand new, you'll need to be 100% certain the hanging bug isn't isolated to just the cart.

***

As for enabling the New 3DS CPU: Clock+L2 (x), check if happens when it's turned Off (x). If having setting turned off doesn't fix it, then the n3DS CPU speed mod probably isn't the cause.

Can you provide the name of the game (Title ID) and homebrew? I may need to borrow your save backed up from Checkpoint and try to recreate the hanging bug on my n3DSXL. If you're okay with sharing it but want to keep the SAV private, PM me.

it is Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth (USA)
00040000001D7100
and the homebrew is JKSM
you don't need my save, all you have to do is a wait at least a minute on the game and then switch over to jksm and it hangs

My n3DSXL has:
  • Sys 11.10.0-43U firmware
  • fastboot3ds v1.2 stable
  • Luma3DS v9.1
  • GodMode9 v1.8.0
The copy of the game that will be used:
  • Persona Q2 - New Cinema Labyrinth (USA).cia
  • (2.65 GB - 7F8411D8 | SHA-256: 9DDB7012F525BBA9B6F04F83432793365DA0B41796812D3E34175B31DCC069DC)
  • This leak is the digital version dumped from Nintendo eShop.
I will be using the CIA version of JKSM (12.20.18) [767 KB - 2951F174].

Check this post later on what I find. I'll hold off from testing with the accompanying DLC.

Update Edit #1 - This game is weird and has a long ass intro just to get to the first save point. Well, the good news is that it's not just you! My n3DSXL also froze black after the Nintendo 3DS logo when (HOME) button switching from Persona Q2 to JKSM.

Update Edit #2 - Yup. The same thing happens with the *.cia version of Checkpoint v3.6.0 or really any title. The game's borked. Someone should e-mail ATLUS about pushing an update.

Update Edit #3 - Nope. Exiting out of Persona 2 with (x) Close to go back to HOME Menu and then launching a different title doesn't bypass the freeze.

honestly, im okay with having to reboot to play another game, its annoying but at least i know its not a problem with my 3ds. thank you.
