Hiya!

So I've been experiencing some issues.
I was playing Mario Kart 7 with some friends in the GBAtemp Discord server, and then, we wanted to play Smash.

Now here'a the problem: No wonder what I did, I cannot load Smash at all. Black screen on boot.
I've updated everything. Boot9strap, Luma, firmware. Nothing helped. The game simply refuses to work.

Trying to run it from retail cart. Console is 11.8 U.

Does anyone know what I could have been doing wrong?

Just to add a bit more info, Vin said on Discord it worked before installing a Smash update. So the cartridge itself should be fine.

try deleting and redownloading the game updates and/or dlc
I tried that, didn't do anything.

Old or New model? Maybe it's an issue with the extended memory mode.
New 3DS model.

That's correct. The game used to work prior all of these updates.

Nope. Never did such a thing.

First, back up your save + extdata for Super Smash Bros. with Checkpoint or JKSM if you haven't yet.

***

Then, let me go downstair and get coffee. I'm having a moment getting stumped at a different thread and don't feel too good with troubleshooting stuff atm. :(

BRB.

Edit - Okay, I's back.

1. Do you own any other 2DS or 3DS game carts / flashcarts besides Super Smash Bros? If yes, do those games work?
If other games work on your n3DS, we can rule out bad game cart reader.

2. Like what @MythicalData suggested, do you have another 3DS system or close-by friends with a 2DS/3DS to try Super Smash on?
Gotta check if the 3DS game cart itself isn't bad.

3. Does Super Smash Bros still hangs when launched as an SD card title?
Here's what you can try. In GodMode9, dump the cart as *.3ds → *.cia file. Then, install it on HOME Menu with FBI.

Sorry for the late reply. I have access to another 3ds, and another cart of smash, so I'll test them out.
I haven't thought of making a save data backup, so I could also get these things and see if I can start from clean. Otherwise I'll see if I can save some sd card space and try to install the game.

I'll report results back later today :)

Alright... a day later, here's the summary:

Luma settings combinations: no luck.
Deleting all Update data, DLC, then ran: Softlock on the 3ds splash screen.
Dumping cart to CIA from GM9: No issues, so I know the cart is fine.
Cart works in another unhacked 3ds.
Any other programs work on my 3ds. Same for other carts.
Installing the game from CIA: No issue.
Running it: same problem, black screen on boot.
Same CIA booted without update data: softlock on the 3ds splash screen.

I'm really clueless :(

Do any of those other carts you tried use extended memory? Monster Hunter 4? Super Mario Maker?

If you're not sure, you can download the Kirby Battle Royale demo from the eShop.

I just got it, it boots and runs fine.
I have no idea if extended memory is related, as I use a New3ds.

try backing up and deleting exdata and save data, then loading it

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I would, how do I do that exactly?
there's an option under title iirc correctly you'd just chose smash then chose import seed

From [GitHub, ihaveamac] SeedDB list, this title isn't known to require seed. You can try adding one anyhow.

While connected online,
  • FBI → Titles → Super Smash Bros. → Import Seed
***

If the above fails to solve your problem, try this.

1A. Take a spare 4 GB or larger SD card and copy everything off it onto a computer.
or
1B. Take your main SD card and copy everything off it onto a computer.
  • You may want to stop and warn us if you were using an EmuNAND setup.

2. Reformat the card as FAT32 + 32 KB cluster size with Windows File Explorer or guiformat.
  • (Alternative Option) If your card capacity is 128 GB or larger, you may instead use 64 KB cluster size.

3. With the card still empty, do a full Write + Verify Test in H2testw. Do not skip this step.
4. If the card passes the test, delete the *.h2w test files.
  • If an error was reported, stop the test. Replace the hardware failed card. Go back to step 1A or 1B.

5A. (If you followed step 1A), build a test custom firmware setup. Do not use any files from your main setup.
  • You may use the CFW starter kit found here.
or

5B. (If you followed step 1B), copy everything back onto the card. Rename the Nintendo 3DS folder to something else.
  • Example: Rename Nintendo 3DS → Nintendo 3DS (main).
  • This will allow the 3DS system to create a fresh Nintendo 3DS folder.
  • You may supplement with the CFW starter kit mentioned in step 5A.

6. With the card inserted, hold (Select) when turning on the 3DS to access Luma3DS v9.1 configuration.

Select only this as the default:
  • (x) Show NAND or user string in System Settings
Unless you have certain mod plugins that require this option, avoid using:
  • ( ) Disable ARM11 exception handlers

7. :!: Because SSB is a known title with anti-cheat protection, you must back up the save and extdata in either Checkpoint or JKSM if not done so already.
  • Any tampering to the *.sav file can trigger the game to automatically delete your progress.
  • Technically, this step is out of order. You would do this upon using your main Nintendo 3DS folder again.

8. Attempt playing Super Smash Bros both through 3DS game cart and as *.cia title installed on HOME Menu.
