Hey guys!
After a long stay at the 3DS community, I have decided to come back to the PS3 (Mainly because of Persona 5 :P)!
I purchased a (heavily) used fat PS3 (the second line, CECHK01), and I have some questions:
  • Which is the best thermal paste to get? I've heard conflicting reports about Arctic Silver 5 and Arctic MX-4. A friend who works at a repair shop also has one he recommends but is neither of those, seems to be similar to Arctic Silver, is it a good idea to try it out?
  • Is it mandatory to switch the fan if it isn't a 19-blade?
  • The console doesn't respond to the power/eject buttons (I've been keeping it disassembled and just press the contacts directly, the metal tabs for the buttons seem to have rusted quite a bit), what can I do to fix it?
  • Some of the metal parts of the inside casing seem to have rusted a bit, would that affect my console in the long run(none of the important components have any rust on them, thankfully)?
  • A few people have suggested to change the power supply, is that mandatory for this console or can I keep using the one that came installed?
  • Let's say I want to downgrade in the future, how hard is it to set up the e3 flasher? I've heard horror stories about the NOR clip being total trash.
Sorry for the long list of questions, and thanks again for all your help! :D

Fine choice of console! :) all this is a matter of opinion but I'll try and help you out.

1. IMO they're all roughly the same, anything is better than the cheap crap Sony used especially when it's dried out. Just pick a quality one. Doing under the IHS will make far more difference even if you use cheap paste. I personally use Halnziye HY880 which is a generic brand but was like £5 for a huge tube and has a heat transfer rating on par with the expensive ones
2. Nope, not a massive difference when I changed mine.
3. Clean the contacts up and bend them a little to make sure they're making good contact
4. If there's no corrosion on the board hen don't worry about it!
5. Not on that model I don't think, it *should* have the cooler one.
6. No experience with the E3 flasher but you need to be good at soldering

Given that model I think the flasher has a solder less clip however those clips are a royal pain in the ass and I've had more trouble with them than not.....

This guys videos were the best I found. He goes on a bit sometimes, but that is better than the people who just sail through their videos expecting you to know how to do it before watching the video (in which case what was the point of watching????).

You probably should watch all the videos as he deals with a few different ways of doing it.

You only need to worry about making sure the clip is held firmly enough in place that it works, but doesn't crush the clip or the chip. Don't worry about it being too loose, you can slightly increase the pressure until the e3 flasher is happy, then make three dumps and verify those.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions and info! I'll probably buy a tube of arctic mx-4 as I read it plays nicely with the electronics so it's a huge plus and not that expensive!
I'll wait out on the e3 flasher as I'll change the thermal paste and then play through Persona 5 while I save enough money to buy one :P
Also, how is the emulation support for the console? What kinds of consoles (aside from PS1&2) can I expect to run on PS3?

Just done under the IHS on another 60GB, it's fairly easy if you have the right tools and patience!

I stand corrected on the soldering thing!

I don't think I'm going to bother with downgrading any of mine as I have a Henkaku PSTV that emulates everything the PS3 can including N64 and is more reliable.
