Broke down lol. I've recently been playing Diablo 2 Lord of Destruction, and I'm kinda addicted to it. And Torchlight looks like it'll be fun. I bought it along with the pre-purchase of Torchlight 2. What's the game like?

It's very reminiscent of Diablo 3, minus the online.

I cant remember whether it had online multiplayer or not, but not many people I know play so that option was out for me from the get go

It's lightweight and fun

It's got no multiplayer, which, according to many reviews, kept it from getting a really high score (since a game like that thrives on multiplayer).

I beat it and didn't think it was incredibly fantastic, but it's definitely a fun game, and at $15/free (currently) a better buy than most.

After all, people wouldn't be so excited for the sequel if the first game was horrible, right? :P

Diablo 3? You do realise Torchlight came out before Diablo 3 right? You mean Diablo 2 surely. If anything (from what I've seen) Diablo 3 looks more like Torchlight than Diablo 2.

I've been tempted to buy it too but since the second one is coming quite soon (Summer 2012) and it seems to have multiplayer, I'm just going to wait for that.
It's looks very promising.

It was a fun game, if a bit more single-minded because there's really only one main dungeon. The landscapes and environments do change, and the enchanting system is definitely better than the current Diablo III's. I had fun with it, it's a good way to throw away one of your weekend days. If you don't own the first one, then you should definitely just play Diablo III or Torchlight. I'm hesitant to recommend Torchlight 2 because I don't know whether it'll have more than an 8 hour campaign *cough* Diablo's difficulty settings =/= extra content.

Yeah you didn't have the various branches and such you might have expected from a newer game, it was pretty linear.

Even the side quests fell into one of three categories.

1 - Find this item that happens to be a few floors below you and you'll run across anyways.
2 - Kill this miniboss that happens to be on the next floor and you'll run across it anyways.
3 - Hey go through this short mini-dungeon that's just like the one you're currently going through.

And even the main quest was little more than "go to the next floor" for the next cutscene", barring the one time you needed to split up to grab some items to unlock a portal.

If you've ever played the Fate series, know that they worked on this as well and it really shows (for better or worse). That said, of course the game has it's upsides compared to others. Being able to store things on your pet and send it away to sell the loot you collected was a great way to speed things up and save on town portal scrolls.

Torchlight's pretty linear, and being single-player only doesn't help, but it's still fun. Torchlight II's much better in both regards, from what I've played of it. 2-6 person online/LAN co-op play, plus overworld exploration as well as dungeons (which I assume are still randomly generated, though I doubt the overworld is), with sidequests being a bit better than "go to floor x and kill monster y, and/or bring me item z". Also, a wider selection of pets and better character customization. I only played two or three hours into the beta but it convinced me that the full game was worth $20.
