Hacking Just bought a 3DS XL that happens to be on 4.5.0, not sure what to do now...

Hey there,

So HMV in the UK were having a complete clearance on all their Nintendo stuff and I managed to nab an (unfortunately pink) 3DS XL for £79.99. I was surprised to see it is on firmware 4.5.0... so I have yet to update it, but don't know whether to or not.

I have a red 3DS that I've had for a while and is on the newest firmware. This has my Nintendo Network ID on it, and loads of Streetpass data.

So I have some questions... with emunand on the gateway 3DS, it takes you to the most recent firmware until you restart the 3DS, right? Is it possible to store stuff within the emulated firmware, or is it that every time you do it you get essentially a blank updated 3DS?

What I'd like to do would be to system transfer my red 3DS to the XL on emunand, then be able to play either bought recent games or gateway games using the XL. Is this possible?

Also, is it still 1 micro SD per game on the gateway?

Thanks!

Yes, it is possible to store stuff within emunand.
However, it would require the emunand be upgraded to the highest firmware so you can perform system transfer.
Since system settings doesn't work on 7.2 emunand right now, there is no way to system transfer.
But assuming gateway fixes the problem, yes, you can access your previously bought games on the XL.
And no, Gateway now supports multirom drag and drop.

Wow, cheers for the quick reply!

Storing stuff in emunand sounds good.

OK, so once gateway gets updated to properly support 7.2 emunand, I could system transfer my current 3DS to it, then while in sleep mode it would stay as 7.2 but once I fully turn it off it would revert to 4.5? And when say Smash Bros 3DS comes out, I could turn it on as still 4.5, emunand up to whatever firmware Smash Bros requires, then swap in the game card (definitely buying that game) and be able to play it with my Network ID?

Also, the Network ID that is attached to my 3DS is currently stuck on my old flatmates Wii U, so whether Nintendo can unlink that so I can use it on my Wii U will probably determine whether I actually do a system transfer or not.

No, emunand does not revert. It'll stay the same even if you turn off the 3ds.
So you'll be stuck on 7.2 once you perform a system update unless you delete the emunand partition on your sd card and set up emunand again (but then you'll lose the data from system transfer)
And I'm not sure how nnid works on the WiiU. But on the 3ds it's impossible to transfer nnid from one 3ds to another without system transfer.

Oh what I meant was, say I'm using the emunand with 7.2 and all my data from the system transfer, if I put the 3DS to sleep (but not power off) will it stay on the emunand so I can streetpass people or will it have reverted to the 4.5 nand?

It'll stay in emunand.

Awesome. It's looking like I'm probably going to get a gateway then.

So is the only difference between booting Gateway mode and Classic mode from the gateway menu that Gateway mode is for playing games on the gateway red card and classic mode is for playing retail games that require a firmware higher than 4.5?

There's no guarantee that you'll be able to play Smash Bros using emunand, the Gateway team would have to make a breakthrough or two first. They're definitely trying, but no guarantees.

I thought emunand supported all current games (up to 7.1)?

Not all games/apps are supported I believe.
And seeing how Smash Bros is not even out yet it could include a newer firmware requirement or other anti-piracy methods

Yeah the first (on a cart) game that won't work with gateway came out about a week ago, the issue had already been predicted, with a few eshop games released using new encryption methods that don't work with gateway, it was inevitable that this would start to appear on retail carts, anything released from now on May or May not work depending on if 7.x encryption has been enabled( it's fairly likely Nintendo first party games will of switched to the new methods so it's unlikely Pokemon ruby and sapphire or smash bros will work), gateway have had several months to get "cracking" on this issue (the hacking community was aware of 7.x encryption as soon as 7.x was released), but with retail games now emerging with 7.x encryption enabled the pressure is on to see if gateway can deliver

  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.

never had that i don't think

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
