Actually, most people who pay end up getting their files back, for one simple reason: If ransomware crooks in general are perceived by most victims as not giving you back your files even if you pay, people simply won't pay. If they are known to keep up their end of the "deal" and return people's files to them, then people will pay. This is a unique type of crime in which not only the criminal's reputation, but the general reputation of this class of criminal, is essential to keep them in business.

If kidnappers killed their victims even when their families paid the ransom, families wouldn't pay the ransom. People pay because they believe they'll get their loved ones back. The logic is the same.

There is one important difference: you can't back up your daughter, but you can back up your 10TB collection of of roms which, being a law-abiding citizen, you dumped one by one from legally purchased games. So do that and you can tell the ransomware folks where to stick it if they ever get to your hard drives.

Obviously the scale is completely different, but the principle is the same. Like denying dessert to a well-fed person after they had a big meal and denying a proper meal to a starving person who hasn't eaten in five days.

Not eating proper meal it’s a big mistake to decide to not be able to survive. Also to fight with mafia corporate gangs and computer hackers it would be adequate to have access of using weapons modern innovative arsenal.
