How to use GW+Luma3DS+A9LH

Since I've seen so many threads about people having trouble using Gateway alongside A9LH, I thought that I'd finally pop my guide cherry to provide the information in a centralized location. This guide assumes that you've already followed Plailect's OTP guide up to at least Part 5, Section III.

Until Gateway comes out with their A9LH payload, there are pretty much two ways to boot into Gateway Mode while using Luma3DS+A9LH. They both involve the use of EmuNAND, so the choice really comes down to which would you like to be more convenient: booting into GW Mode (10.7 EmuNAND) or installing GBA/DSiWare (10.7 SysNAND). Make sure that "Use SysNAND FIRM as default" is turned off and "Autoboot SysNAND" is turned on in either setup for it to work properly.

1. If booting straight into GW Mode is of importance, then you will need a 9.2 SysNAND and a 10.7 EmuNAND. On the 9.2 SysNAND, set up MenuHax with Trigger 1 (no-buttons) and CtrBootManager to autoboot GW.3dsx.

The drawbacks to this setup are that you're still relying on MenuHax and GBA/DSiWare have to be double installed to work with EmuNAND. However, I find this build to be far more user-friendly for everyday use. Want to boot into GW Mode? Insert GW card and press the power button. Want to play GBA/DSiWare? Hold L while turning on the console.

2. If ease of installing GBA/DSiWare is more important, then you will need a 10.7 SysNAND and 9.2 EmuNAND. On the 9.2 EmuNAND you can either use MenuHax+CtrBootManager as above or the GW Launcher cia file. If using MenuHax+CtrBootManager, you should use Trigger 1 (L) for your MenuHax trigger and set the CtrBootManager recovery to any button other than L. Regardless of method chosen to launch GW.3dsx, you have to access the Gateway Menu by holding L at launch or not having the GW card inserted. Then, you have to hold B to bring up the Gateway SysNAND option and press X to confirm.

The tradeoff here is having to install GBA/DSiWare once in exchange for steps added to launching GW Mode each time you power on the system. With this setup, you'll have to hold L while booting to get into GW Mode. To boot into Luma3DS to play GBA/DSiWare, just turn on the 3DS.

Regardless of which method you choose, I recommend installing Quick Reboot to make switching between GW and Luma3DS easier. It saves you from having to turn the 3DS off and on whenever you're switching.

I followed the awesome Plailect guide till the end and now I only have a Emu SysNAND 11.0. I tried to boot gateway mode from HBL but I only got a black screen. Is there a way to go to gateway mode? I only want to do it to backup my cartridge games and get the private reader (uncart can't do it)

With mysetup, I have an updated 11.0U sysNAND, and a 9.2U emuNAND just to boot gateway launcher.

This guide's method has been made obsolete because GW released an A9LH.bin that works with the public A9LH implementations. I'm going to either rewrite the OP or just have this thread deleted in a few days.

Just download the .bin from GW's website and do one of the following:
1. If you want GW to be your primary CFW, then set up a boot manager (I personally use CtrBootManager9, but others work just the same) and make GW the default boot entry.
2. If you want Luma to be your primary CFW, then just put the GW A9LH.bin in the \luma\payloads\ folder and rename according to Luma's chainloader settings.

Regardless of whichever way you choose, remember to only update your firmware while in Luma3DS.

I've updated Luma3DS to the latest daily, same with A9LH. My emuNAND is the latest, sysNAND is a couple versions older. I can't seem to boot Gateway mode anymore. I can access sysNAND and emuNAND, and play the games on those just fine, but GW doesn't work.

Pretty much all the games that come out buggy get patched soon after anyways. Not to many that I've noticed are game breaking bugs. Of course I mostly only game on Xbox seriesx.

    @BigOnYa It's still unacceptable

Game updates are a norm today, deal with it. They only make games better. GTAV gets weekly updates still today.

  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
I have not played a game in years that had a game breaking bug on launch, so I wouldn't say a crutch.

Yep, been playing fallout76 for years, since launch, I never had any game breaking bugs, or corrupted saves. Don't play No Mans Sky, its boring.

At launch there were some issues
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Issues? All games have issues, but not game breaking.
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Again don't play on PC, nor would play that. And who knows, some those "issues" could just be your PC.

usually issues are a shitty PC

  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
When I used to game on PC, I'd pirate PC games all the time, and some yes would crash often, maybe they were bad rips or something. I've had my SeriesX for over 2 years now and never have had a game crash yet, or any game breaking bugs. I have seen weird bugs like NPC walking thru floors or walls, but not often.
