If you have a PC or Android device you can use the Save Game Manager homebrew. That worked for me backing up/restoring pokemone black2/white2 .sav's (i had to use version 2.0.4 on my R4igold3ds, newest version wouldnt work)

oh, bummer. From what I read it sounds like a USB save dongle might be your best bet; that or find someone with a DSL maybe.

Yeah, the DSi and 3DS are different in that besides obvious hardware changes, they can no longer do hotswapping of cartridges. Once a cartridge is removed, the system will not read anything else until it is returned to the Home Menu. Unless you can get a phat or Lite, you'll have to resort to a save dongle.
