Hacking How can I use a USB CD/DVD drive w/Wii

I have a lot of movies backed up onto CD-Rs. These files play great in MPlayerCE when copied onto SD or whatever. Of course, we all know that the Wii drive doesn't want to read CD-Rs. So, I hooked up an older USB CD/DVD drive to the Wii in hopes I could use it. The drive powers up, and the Wii seems to detect it OK. However, whenever I browse Wii USB and pick FAT32, it crashes.

Is this because the Wii doesn't know how to read the CD's filesystem, ISO9660 or UDF or whatever? Is there any other workaround? I would love to have my Wii replace my DivX player completely.

I have cIOS rev14, Hermes' IOS, and the MPlayerCE version of Hermes' IOS installed.

basically anything will power up if you hook it up to a powered USB port

just get a hdd to store your avi's like me.

I don't know, but I suspect the USB CD drive just looks like any other Mass Storage Device - then again, I've never written code to interact with anything like that so I'm only guessing. I think It's more likely that the issue is that the homebrew you're using doesn't know what to do with the CDFS/ISO 9660 filesystem.

There aren't any drivers to use your drive, I suspect.
The software probably doesn't know how to handle your drive's hardware.
Also there's the fact that there isn't a homebrew out there that supports USB CD/DVD loading with CDFS/UDF filesystems.

That's kind of what I figured, unfortunately. I assumed it'd be fine as a mass storage device, too.

I have one, I just don't care to copy 500+ CD-Rs over to it by hand

Try geexbox.
If that doesn't work, install linux and run mplayer from there.

it will only work in geexbox/linux,

otherwise you would need to modify mplayer ce to read iso9660 filesystems on usb

Formatting what? I'm not trying to get a HDD to work, I'm trying to get a CD-ROM to work.

I didn't even consider trying Geexbox. I've honestly preferred to avoid it until now
