2: does the wii play wii games written to CD R or DVD R?
3: if i use them for personal use only, is it still considered piracy?
4: do i neeed a special player for them?

so maybe if i want to sell them at a garage sale i will have to put them in the free box..... :rofl2:

First question is 'you can't'. Wii would only accept DVD recordable media or pressed discs.
Second, yes for DVD-R with a modchip, and no for CD-R.
Third, its a touchy subject, but depends on how you would perceive it. In my opinion, it is legal if you make a backup for your own personal use, but not if you're going to sell it or redistribute the media in some other form.
Forth, you only need a DVD burner that can support RAW DAO burning and ImgBurn.

Older wii's can play backup disks without a modchip.

But loading speeds are better with a usbloader, not to mention you'll make your Wii's disk drive last longer the less you use it

Yeah, that and ALL Wiis can load games with a USB loader. Also, iirc USBLoaderGX can rip physical Wii (and maybe GameCube?) discs directly on the Wii itself using the actual disc drive.

Oh yeah, totally forgot about NeoGamma. But, that would require an older drive, DMS to D2C to be exact.

Short answer:
You can't write discs an unmodified Wii will consider valid.

Longer answer in unsorted information chunks:
Wii drives are strictly DVD only on physical level. They don't have an infrared laser needed for CDs.
Wii and GC discs are DVDs on physical level, but not on logical level (slightly shifted sector format). Consumer writers are not allowed to offer such modes. We would need an open hardware project for a custom DVD writer.
Older Wii drives can be convinced in reading standard DVD±R with software and/or hardware modification.
All non-white consoles are too new
All RVL-101 (with GC ports) are too new.
Cleanrip will deliver full ISO files suitable for burning to blank media.
Some games stutter at videos when using softmod to load standard DVDs.
Wii will only read DVD+R when setting the booktype to DVD-ROM (DVD-R don't have that problem). Modchips can work around this problem – softmod not.
Burned copies will work in PCs using Dolphin emulator (original discs not because PC drives won't read them).
========

Burned media are more or less worthless nowadays unless you do it for yourself to have something to touch. Go easy with the aging drives and prefer USB loading for all practical use.
Please don't try to sell or distribute copies. You will get in deep trouble for gaining nothing.
