Hacking How can I tell the difference between brick and unpatched

My friend has a Acekard 2i and I had patched before and it worked for a while. But now he updated it to one of the recent AKAIO versions and now it seems his DSi doesn't detect it in the slot. I was wondering if it was just messed up and now the DS actually recognizes it but won't play it (or refuse to recognize it). OR he somehow bricked it. I tried reformatting the card and putting back on the firmware but it still gets the same problem. Is their a safe way of testing and also, what do I need to do to fix the problem if it is a patching error?

Although I am a little skeptical about having to do the TK paper trick, I don't want to have to resort to that...
